“Just push through it.”
I have heard this advice more times than I can count. And for years I followed it without question.
Pushed through the exhaustion. Pushed through the anxiety. Pushed through every signal my body sent me that something needed to change.
Here’s what nobody told me at the time.
Pushing through is not resilience. It’s override. And your body keeps a very detailed record of every time you ignore what it’s telling you.
Mine sent the bill eventually. A car wreck. A shingles diagnosis. A hip surgery I’d been avoiding for years. Each one was my body finally getting loud enough that I couldn’t override it anymore.
Real resilience doesn’t look like gritting your teeth and getting through it. It looks like noticing the signal before it becomes a crisis. It looks like pausing for sixty seconds instead of pushing for six more hours.
The karate chop point. Side of your hand. Sixty seconds. Tap it the next time someone tells you to just push through. Or better yet... tap it before they have the chance to.
If you’ve been told to just push through it for most of your life... oh boy. You deserve better advice than that.
