🚨 Your Body Determines More Than You Think

One of the biggest mistakes I see in amateur baseball and softball is this: Families spend thousands of dollars on travel ball, showcases, camps, and private lessons……while completely overlooking the physical development required to compete at a high level.

Every baseball and softball player wants to hit the ball harder. Throw harder. Run faster. Move better. Be more consistent.

But…Are you developing the body that’s capable of doing those things?

I talk to athletes all the time who tell me they want to play at a high level, but they’re significantly undersized, 25-50 pounds away from maximizing their physical potential. Many don’t follow a structured strength program. Nutrition is inconsistent. Recovery is rarely a priority. Then they act surprised when they aren’t getting the results they want.

Whether your goal is making the middle school team, competing in high school, playing in college, or simply becoming the best player you can be, the message is the same:

Train Your Body!

Strength matters.
Power matters.
Speed matters.
Nutrition matters.
Recovery matters.

Those things don’t happen by accident.

This is also why families need to think carefully about how they spend the offseason.

Baseball and softball are built on explosive movements. Sprinting. Rotational power. Force production. Quick acceleration. High-speed throwing. High-speed swinging.

The offseason should primarily be your opportunity to build lean muscle, increase strength, improve power, enhance speed, and develop the physical tools that allow you to perform at a high level.

Here’s the question every athlete should ask themselves:

Is what I’m doing today helping me become the athlete that I want to be?

Swing Angry. Train Different. Get Results.

Success is scheduled - it doesn’t happen by chance.

It’s forged during the unseen, private hours of hard work.

Not luck - not overnight success stories.

Tens of thousands of hours of training, failing, and persisting when no one is watching.

The Player Rankings That Actually Matter

Every year, families spend a tremendous amount of time watching third-party player rankings. They celebrate when their athlete is ranked high and worry when they’re overlooked.

The reality is this: The only rankings that truly matter are the evaluations made by the people who are actually building a roster.

A third-party ranking service doesn’t have to decide who fits their culture, who fills a positional need, who projects physically over the next four years, or who receives one of a limited number of roster spots. College coaches do.

That’s why chasing rankings can become a distraction from the things that actually move the needle. Instead of asking, “Where is my athlete ranked?” ask:

* Are they getting stronger, faster, and more athletic?
* Are they becoming more skilled?
* Are they performing consistently against quality competition?
* Are they taking care of their academics?
* Are they becoming someone a coach wants in their program?

College coaches also rely on trusted relationships. They talk to travel coaches, high school coaches, instructors, recruiters, and other coaches they respect. Recruiting isn’t based solely on what happens during one showcase or what a website says. It’s built on evaluations from people whose opinions have been earned over years of developing and identifying talent.

That’s why it’s so important to build relationships with credible coaches and instructors who genuinely know your game and can confidently advocate for you. A trusted recommendation from someone a college coach respects often carries far more weight than a number beside your name on a ranking list.

Every year, I ask middle school and high school athletes about their goals, and the answer is almost always the same: “I want to play college baseball,” or “I want to play college softball.”

But over the years I’ve realized that many young athletes fall in love with the destination long before they understand the journey…

Every year, I ask middle school and high school athletes about their goals, and the answer is almost always the same: “I want to play college baseball,” or “I want to play college softball.” I love hearing those answers because they tell me an athlete is dreaming big. Every coach wants athle...
