🌊 Celebrating 20 Years of Sailing in VESSIGNY Team VESSIGNY Vikings

17 September 2005 – 17 September 2025

Today marks a historic milestone β€” 20 years since the birth of sailing in Vessigny. From humble beginnings on the shores of Vessigny Beach on 17 September 2005, this grassroots sailing initiative has grown into a national powerhouse, producing athletes, coaches, and administrators who have contributed significantly to the sailing landscape of Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean.

βš“ Humble Beginnings

Just a few months after its founding, on 27 December 2005, Vessigny sailors made their first competitive appearance at the Guardian Holdings End-of-Year Regatta. Coached by Jakob Gustafsson, the pioneering team included:
Patrick Francois
Faith Moraine
Garth Suite
Josh Noel
Emmanuel Moraine
Deknife Charles
Though they finished at the bottom of the fleet, it was clear that this team was full of promise and heart.

🌍 A Global Influence, A Local Rise

By 2006, the momentum picked up. Coaches from Sweden, Argentina, and Peru brought international expertise to Vessigny, adding layers of technical skills to an already talented group. By November 2006, two sailors β€” Daniel Briggs and Russel Franklin β€” had emerged as standout performers, earning places on the National Optimist Sailing Team. Both would go on to become consistent national representatives.

πŸ† The Golden Era: 2007–2009

The year 2007 saw Vessigny-based sailors make a significant mark on the world stage. Trinidad and Tobago finished 3rd in the Optinam Nations Cup in Puerto Rico, while also competing in the World Optimist Championship, South American Championship, European Championship, the Orange Bowl Regatta, and numerous regional clinics.
In 2008, even more sailors from Vessigny earned spots on the National Team β€” a contribution that inspired Trinidad and Tobago to win its first-ever Caribbean Dinghy Championships in Antigua. The feat was repeated in Barbados in 2009, solidifying Vessigny’s reputation as a breeding ground for champions.

βš“ Expansion & Legacy

Sailing programs began expanding:
2008–2009: Introduced to Point Fortin through the Government's July–August Vacation Camp Program
2011:
