The Trinidad and Tobago chapter of the Special Olympics began operations in 1982. Currently we have over 1,500 athletes, 300 coaches and countless volunteers.

Special Olympics is a global movement of people creating a new world of inclusion and community, where every single person is accepted and welcomed, regardless of ability or disability. We are helping to make the world a better, healthier and more joyful place—one athlete, one volunteer, one family member at a time. Currently we have over 1,500 athletes, 300 coaches and countless volunteers who have worked or trained with as well as participated in events hosted by the organization. Some quick facts:

Founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver
1968 – First International Special Olympics Games hosted three countries and 1,000 athletes
2003 – Special Olympics World Summer Games host 150 countries and 8,000 athletes.
2005 – Special Olympics serves 2,256,733 athletes worldwide

The energy was electric, the competition was fierce and the smiles were endless!
We're throwing it back to the basketball action at SOTT National Games 2026, where our athletes brought their passion, teamwork and determination to the court. Every pass, shot, rebound and defensive play showed the incredible skill and commitment of our athletes.

Beyond the scoreboard, basketball created moments of connection, confidence and camaraderie. Teammates supported each other, coaches inspired from the sidelines and families cheered every achievement.

These moments capture the true spirit of Special Olympics—celebrating ability, building friendships and providing opportunities for athletes to shine. 🌟

Today, Special Olympics Trinidad and Tobago celebrates one of the most treasured symbols of our culture—the steelpan, the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago and a sound that continues to bring people together around the world. 💙

And what better way to celebrate than with one of our very own athletes, Kellie Simmons, sharing some early Christmas cheer through the sweet sounds of pan! 🎄🥁✨

Kellie reminds us that music, like sport, has the power to inspire, connect and create moments of joy. Her passion and talent are a wonderful reflection of the creativity and ability within our Special Olympics family.

🐴💙 Throwback: Equestrian at National Games 2026! 💙🐴

We're taking a ride back to one of the most special moments from SOTT National Games 2026—the incredible equestrian competition! 🌟

At the Police Mounted & Canine Branch in St. James, our athletes and their equine partners showcased trust, focus, confidence and determination in every moment. The bond between athlete and horse was truly inspiring, reflecting the patience, dedication and teamwork required to excel in this sport.

From navigating the course to celebrating achievements, our athletes demonstrated courage and commitment while embracing the joy of competition. 🏅
Equestrian reminded us that sport is about connection, growth and creating opportunities for everyone to shine. Every ride was a story of partnership, perseverance and possibility.

Today, on Safe Sport Day, Special Olympics Trinidad and Tobago proudly joins the global movement led by Safe Sport International to reaffirm our commitment to creating sporting environments where every athlete feels safe, respected and empowered.

Sport should be a place where athletes can learn, compete and thrive—free from abuse, harassment, discrimination and harm. At SOTT, safeguarding our athletes is at the heart of everything we do. Together with our coaches, volunteers, families, officials and partners, we all have a role to play in ensuring that sport remains a positive and inclusive experience for everyone.

As we observe this important day, we encourage our entire community to Play Your Part and Take the Pledge to champion safe sport in Trinidad and Tobago. By working together, we can foster a culture of respect, accountability and inclusion where every athlete has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Today, Special Olympics Trinidad and Tobago joins the nation in commemorating African Emancipation Day—a time to honour the strength, resilience and enduring legacy of those who fought for freedom, dignity and justice.

This day reminds us of the importance of preserving our rich cultural heritage while continuing to build a society where every individual is valued, respected and included.

The African drum has long been a powerful symbol of identity, unity and resilience. Today, we celebrate that legacy through the rhythm and spirit of one of our incredible athletes Justin Providence, whose performance reminds us that culture has the power to inspire, connect and bring communities together.
