Salps help the Earth through a quiet but important role in the ocean’s carbon cycle.

They feed by filtering phytoplankton from seawater. Phytoplankton absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, so when salps consume them, that carbon is moved out of the surface layer of the ocean. Salps produce dense waste that sinks rapidly into deep water, carrying carbon with it and keeping it stored away from the atmosphere.

This process supports the ocean’s natural ability to regulate climate. By transferring carbon downward and influencing plankton levels, salps contribute to the balance of marine ecosystems and the long-term health of the planet.

A large octopus of Richelieu Rock rests against the reef, its body pressed low to the seabed and arms spread loosely over sand and coral rubble. Its skin blends with the surrounding textures, catching just enough light to reveal subtle patterns and shifting tones.

Remaining still is part of its presence here. By matching color and texture, the octopus becomes difficult to separate from the reef itself, conserving energy while staying alert to movement in the dark around it.
