The Fast Form (Kuaiquan) of Wu family Taijiquan is a routine with a uniquely fascinating character.

According to the Wu family tradition, this form was transmitted from Grandmasters Yang Luchan and Yang Banhou through Quan You, the founder of Wu family Taijiquan.

Another perspective posits that because this Fast Form is entirely absent among Quan You's Beijing-lineage disciples, it was more likely developed later during the era of Wu Jianquan, who maintained a close relationship with Yang Shaohou.

Regardless of its origins, this routine is by no means simply the slow form performed at high speed like Changquan or Shaolinquan to pass off as a "fast form"; rather, it embodies numerous distinct principles of internal transformation.

The practitioner featured in this clip is Shi Meilin, the only adopted daughter of Grandmasters Ma Yueliang and Wu Yinghua.

Chong Shouyong (崇寿永, 1906–1981) was both the nephew and an indoor disciple of Master Tian Zhaolin.

As is widely known, Tian Zhaolin initially studied the Middle Frame (Zhongjia) Taijiquan under Master Yang Jianhou. Before his passing, Yang Jianhou instructed Tian Zhaolin to formally acknowledge Yang Chengfu as his master, so that he could assist the Yang family under Yang Chengfu's leadership. Later on, however, when Tian Zhaolin received personal guidance from Yang Shaohou, he realized that his skills could be elevated to an even higher level. Consequently, he took Yang Shaohou as another master to learn the Small Frame (Xiaojia) Taijiquan.

In truth, the Middle Frame serves as an expanded manifestation of the Small Frame. With a solid foundation in the Middle Frame, one could practically grasp the Small Frame within mere days. Nevertheless, within Chong Shouyong’s lineage, there still exists a preparatory routine prior to entering the Small Frame, known as the Standard Frame (普及架 - Puji Jia).

This Standard Frame shares the identical physical mechanics and footwork of the Small Frame; the only difference is the absence of the layered circular spirals used to generate Luoxuan Jin (coiling/spiral power) characteristic of the Small Frame.

Nonetheless, old masters regarded this Standard Frame as the paramount foundation of the entire system, with the Small Frame being merely a martial variation (变化 - Bianhua) built upon its rigorous structural foundation.

This collection of black-and-white photographs of Master Chong Shouyong holds profound historical value for the Taijiquan tradition, offering rare insight into what the Small Frame—closely aligned with the style of Yang Shaohou—truly looks like.

During my recent stay in Shanghai, alongside visiting fellow martial artists, I had the privilege over the past two evenings of sharing dinners and discussing the propagation of Taijiquan with Master Ma Jianglin, the youngest son of Grandmaster Ma Yueliang and Madam Wu Yinghua, the lineage holders of Wu family Taijiquan.

Because both Adam Mizner and I formally entered the lineage through the traditional Bai Shi ceremony to learn Taiji fast frame from Master Huang Xinhua, a disciple of Master Ma Pu'an—whose father, 𝘔𝘢 𝘙𝘶𝘯𝘻𝘩𝘪, 𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘠𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘰𝘩𝘰𝘶—I had the opportunity to hear several fascinating accounts directly from the Wu family heirs, including insider details known only to those within the inner circle.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕 𝒊𝒏𝒗𝒐𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒍𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝑴𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑴𝒂 𝑷𝒖'𝒂𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒖 𝒇𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒚.

Whenever Master Ma Jianglin mentions Master Ma Pu'an, he refers to him familiarly as Uncle. Back when they lived in Beijing, their homes were close to each other. Master Ma Pu'an regularly visited Grandmaster Ma Yueliang and Grandmaster Wu Jianquan. When the Wu family relocated to Shanghai, Master Ma Pu'an moved along with them and also studied Wu family Taijiquan under Grandmaster Wu Jianquan.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅 𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒔 𝒂 𝒄𝒂𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒓𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑾𝒖 𝒇𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒚 𝑻𝒂𝒊𝒋𝒊𝒒𝒖𝒂𝒏.

Equally compelling is the case of a certain student of Grandmaster Wu Jianquan who also bore the surname Wu. He formally entered the lineage under Wu Jianquan, but later claimed to have learned a special routine from Yang Shaohou, subsequently attempting to brand his own branch as Wu family Taijiquan. 𝘓𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘯, 𝘢𝘴 𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘣𝘺 𝘢𝘥𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘺 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴, 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘩𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘛𝘢𝘪𝘫𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦.

The Wu family confirmed that while this teacher surnamed Wu did indeed study within the school, his actual age was roughly the same as Grandmaster Ma Yueliang. Furthermore, researchers later uncovered two separate historical documents verifying his true age. As a result, contemporary practitioners lost faith in the credibility of that branch, raising questions that if someone could fabricate their own age, did they truly learn that routine from Yang Shaohou at all, or was it pieced together from others and falsely attributed to an older generation?

In reality, if one pays close attention, such behaviors—dressing eccentrically, sporting anachronistic beards, and writing self-aggrandizing narratives claiming absolute authenticity without credible witnesses—have existed since antiquity. Those capable of discerning fact from fiction are typically seasoned insiders who have studied sufficient documentary evidence and had direct contact with credible firsthand witnesses.

Such attention-seekers are often adept at manufacturing drama, such as creating rhetoric about defending the purity of our lineage from being tarnished. Whenever they see someone fortunate enough to learn from multiple teachers, they reflexively accuse them of stealing techniques. In truth, deep down they know their own art is a patchwork of lifted material, so they constantly resort to attacking others with falsehoods—𝘢 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘧 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘧. Had they been upright practitioners, they would view others through an honest lens.

A clear example lies in my own journey: despite always entering through the front door, approaching every teacher openly and transparently, taking photographs, and disclosing my prior learning history to every master without holding anything back, I have still been targeted by envious, petty-minded individuals (what the Chinese call 小人). Naturally, such attacks only drag down the instigators themselves. Truth cannot be altered by anyone's words, whereas every falsehood is merely waiting for the day it is exposed.

Within the Bajiquan lineage of Liu Yunqiao, there is a practice set that was once kept strictly confidential—so secret, in fact, that demonstrating it publicly was forbidden. This set is known as the Ba Da Shi (written as either 八大式 or 八大势, the Eight Great Postures).

Later on, Master Adam Hsu demonstrated several postures from this set in 2011 at a global gathering of practitioners from the Liu Yunqiao lineage. That same year, my teacher, Master Lin Zhongxi(Johnson Lin)—who served as the president of the Wutan Institute at the time—also demonstrated parts of it, effectively bringing what had long been an esoteric art into public view.

If examined closely, all eight movements are standalone, simple postures without complex choreography, making them seemingly easy to imitate in a short amount of time. Yet without a solid foundation built upon prior training, these postures remain hollow shapes and nothing more.

When Master Adam Hsu returned to Taiwan on business, constrained by a tight schedule, he spent only half a day absorbing the entire set from Master Liu Yunqiao. He stands as the only first-generation disciple to have learned this material, with no record yet indicating that any mid-generation students ever received it, though it is possible someone learned it without it being formally recorded

Toward the end of his life, Master Liu Yunqiao transmitted this set to a group of around ten grand-disciples, including my teacher, Master Lin Zhongxi. According to Master Lin, Master Liu devoted the final five years of his life to refining the nuanced mechanics of this set, restructuring it toward a distinctly more internal character.

In 2018, while traveling to mainland China for work, I had the privilege of receiving instruction from Master Mu Yingchen, an inheritor of the Tianjin Bajiquan lineage. Upon learning that I had practiced Bajiquan under my teacher, he treated me with immense generosity. During my time with him, I requested instruction in Jingang Ba Shi (金刚八式, Eight Diamond Postures)—the fundamental set absent in Liu Yunqiao's lineage—alongside his lineage's intermediate and advanced systems: Liu Da Kai (六大开, Six Great Openings) and Ba Da Zhao (八大招, Eight Great Techniques). He taught them all openly, holding nothing back.

Through comparative analysis, I realized that the Ba Da Shi of the Liu Yunqiao lineage represents an evolution of mainland China's Jingang Ba Shi. More intriguing still, among all the disciples of Li Shuwen—such as the lineages of Huo Diange and Zhou Xinwu—the final advanced set, named Ba Da Zhao, shares an identical sequence of postures, with several matching the Mengcun lineage. Curiously, only a single posture bears resemblance to what is found in Liu Yunqiao's lineage.

These observations stem from my personal study and analysis over the years, left here as food for thought and further inquiry for dedicated practitioners and researchers of the art.

One of the most difficult things to articulate in Taijiquan is how one attunes oneself to the resonance of nature, the lineage, and the masters.

If explained poorly, it easily drives people toward two extremes: the first clings blindly, relying on these concepts as external crutches, while the second dismisses them entirely as superstition simply because they lack the capacity to perceive them.

In a recent interview with a foreign friend, the discussion touched upon connecting with the resonance of the lineage. In truth, I hesitated about whether to edit that part out. Yet, recognizing the subtle value it might offer to those walking a similar path, I chose to leave it intact.

Such an experience is not mysterious. The West often terms it 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, while the East recognizes it as 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐝𝐨𝐦. Nevertheless, if these insights arise groundlessly without a true foundation, they risk degenerating into mental clutter and leading the practitioner astray.

The primary foundation is the core philosophical pillar of the art. If we practice Taijiquan, we must embody the principles of the 𝑫𝒂𝒐 𝑫𝒆 𝑱𝒊𝒏𝒈(𝑻𝒂𝒐 𝑻𝒆 𝑪𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈)—understanding the true utility of emptiness and realizing how the soft overcomes the hard.

The second foundation is whether our daily cultivation genuinely aligns with that philosophy. As the 𝑫𝒂𝒐 𝑫𝒆 𝑱𝒊𝒏𝒈 teaches, "𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘨𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘵." Are we unwittingly acting against this truth by still believing hardness must overcome softness?

These two points are merely concise examples; the complete system of cultivation holds vastly deeper dimensions. When we walk this path with complete honesty toward ourselves, resonance and results soon follow.

Yet there is a deeper layer still. When we train earnestly with dedication—seeking to pe*****te deeper wisdom rather than acquiring skills for display—we begin to sense the living current of the lineage across countless moments: crossing paths with knowledgeable guides, receiving timely generosity when facing a plateau, or chancing upon teachings that illuminate our exact blind spots. In Thai culture, this subtle resonance is known as 𝙍𝙖𝙚𝙣𝙜 𝙆𝙝𝙧𝙪 (𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳).

This 𝙍𝙖𝙚𝙣𝙜 𝙆𝙝𝙧𝙪 cannot be conjured by lip service. It is not attained by studying for a week, performing a kowtow, and calling someone 𝙎𝙝𝙞𝙛𝙪 Conversely, even in the absence of formal ritual, a sincere reverence for the art and deep gratitude toward one’s teachers will allow one to touch the profound depths of the practice just the same.

𝙍𝙖𝙚𝙣𝙜 𝙆𝙝𝙧𝙪 may not even be a supernatural force; the ancient masters may well have moved on through the cycles of rebirth, no longer bound to us. Yet the wisdom woven into nature itself never fades.

When we harmonize with nature—neither resisting nor retreating—the boundary between self and nature dissolves. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒓 𝒘𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒖𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆; 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒘𝒆 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒍𝒖𝒐𝒖𝒔, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒔𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒆.

Inevitably, if one treads the opposite path—consumed by stubborn ego, delusions of superiority, the pride of having arrived, or the endless compulsion to measure higher and lower—one will never be empty enough to receive and resonate with anything greater than oneself.

Various mental objects and emotions revolve and fluctuate along the wheel of saṃsāra; they are not inherently tied to any particular sense base at all. When any sentient being touches and binds itself to them without wisdom, it is dragged down into the abyss of total darkness. This means that the path leading to their 𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝 grows increasingly faint and distant.

If we do not know the true nature of the 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱, there is no way we can ever seek it out correctly. The more one struggles, strives, and searches for it, the deeper one seems to sink into the mire of ruin—that is, 𝒔𝒂ṃ𝒔ā𝒓𝒂. For this reason, Luang Pu Dune Atulo, an eminent noble master, repeatedly emphasized:

"𝑫𝒐 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆."

For this is the sole gateway opening into the path that leads to the realization of the 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱.

The true nature of the 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱 is none other than the state of Buddhahood. Or put another way, the true nature of Buddhahood is itself the state of the 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱. This reality is right before our very noses, closer than a fraction of a grain of sand. Yet, because we who yearn for liberation become ensnared in endless rituals, conventions, and elaborate stages of practice—clinging to them as the only means to cultivate the Six Pāramitās in hopes of attaining Buddhahood someday.

In truth, the authentic state of the 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱—the true Buddha—requires no sequential stages of attainment. It is a single, indivisible whole. We need only sever all attachments to external forms and appearances, turning inward to correctly understand the nature of the mind and its mental objects. Then, we will realize and see for ourselves that this truth has always been right before our noses. When that moment arrives, we shall fully savor the fragrance of this state to our heart's content, truly worthy of the search that has spanned tens of thousands of aeons.

The mind of one still entangled in sensual pleasures is a mind displaced from its primal state through the power of ignorance (𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒋𝒋ā); hence, it is called the mind of a worldly being (𝒑𝒖𝒕𝒉𝒖𝒋𝒋𝒂𝒏𝒂), as it remains subjected to the currents of conditioned phenomena.

However, if we can thoroughly revolutionize or transform this worldly mind back to its 𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙚—without leaving even a single subatomic trace—the mind ceases all shifting and displacement. This means the receptive state that serves as an agent or condition for the mind to waver, ripple, and proliferate into various conditioned states—known as 𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒂-𝒔𝒂ṅ𝒌𝒉ā𝒓𝒂(𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘧𝘢𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴)—is severed immediately.

When the mind comes to a complete, absolute standstill through the power of profound, penetrating wisdom that illuminates and directly touches the very core of the mind—what is called "𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥"—everything ceases. Thus it is said: when the cause is destroyed, the effect born of that cause can no longer sustain its existence. This is what we call "𝑴𝒂𝒉ā𝒔𝒖ññ𝒂𝒕ā" (𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘌𝘮𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴).
