🇸🇴 HISTORY MADE: ABDIRAHMAN HASSAN REPRESENTS SOMALIA AT THE 2026 WORLD ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Somali Rowing and Canoe Federation (SRCF) proudly celebrates a historic milestone as Abdirahman Hassan represented Somalia at the 2026 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, becoming the first Somali athlete ever to compete at a senior World Rowing Championships

Abdirahman competed in the Men’s Single Sculls (M1x) at the Bosbaan in Amsterdam on 26 August, flying the Somali flag alongside athletes from around the world at rowing’s premier global championship.

Although his campaign ended in the opening stage of the competition, his participation represents an achievement far greater than a single race. World Rowing officially recognised the moment as history for Somalia, marking the country’s first appearance at the senior World Rowing Championships.

The achievement is another important step in Abdirahman’s remarkable rowing journey. After taking up rowing while studying at Cardiff University, he went on to make history in 2025 as Somalia’s first rower to compete internationally at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships. His continued development and dedication have now taken him to the senior world stage.

For SRCF, Abdirahman’s participation in Amsterdam demonstrates the progress Somalia is making in establishing itself within international rowing and provides inspiration for a new generation of Somali athletes.

This is not only Abdirahman’s achievement; it is a historic moment for Somali rowing. Seeing the Somali flag represented at the World Rowing Championships demonstrates what is possible as we continue developing the sport and creating opportunities for our young athletes

SRCF congratulates Abdirahman Hassan on this historic achievement and thanks his coaches, supporters, the Somali sporting community and everyone who has contributed to his development.

The journey continues as Somalia looks towards future African and international competitions and the pathway to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Safarka Abdirahman Hassan ee tartanka 2025 World Rowing Under 23 Championships wuxuu ahaa mid si degdeg ah u dhacay. Ciyaaryahanka Soomaaliyeed wuxuu markii ugu horreysay bilaabay ciyaarta doonta (rowing) ka dib markii uu go’aansaday inuu isku dayo ciyaartan markuu bilaabay waxbarashada Jaamacadda Cardiff ee UK dhowr sano ka hor.

“Waxaan bilaabay doonta kaliya si aan u ilaaliyo jirkeyga iyo caafimaadkeyga; si xun baan u tababarnaa waayo kaliya kubbadda koleyga (basketball) ayaan horay u ciyaari jiray,” ayuu sharxayaa Hassan.

Hassan wuxuu ku dhashay Soomaaliya, balse wuxuu dalka ka baxay isagoo weli yar markay waalidkiis u qaxeen UK si ay uga baxsadaan dagaalkii sokeeye ee Soomaaliya. Wuxuu ku koray magaalada Bristol, hase yeeshee wuxuu sidoo kale qoys ku leeyahay Wales, wuxuuna yiri: “Runtii waxaan isku arkaa inaan aad u ahay Welsh.”

Si kastaba ha ahaatee, Soomaaliya weli waxay qayb muhiim ah ka tahay aqoonsigiisa.

“Xiriir weyn ayaan la leeyahay Soomaaliya, gaar ahaan deegaanka aan ku barbaaray ee Bristol wuxuu leeyahay bulsho Soomaali ah oo aad u weyn. Waxaan dareemaa inaan Soomaali ahay, laakiin isla markaa sidoo kale waxaan dareemaa inaan ahay British maadaama aan halkaas ku noolaa nolosheyda oo dhan,” ayuu ku daray.

Laakiin markii uu wicitaanka ka helay xiriirka Somali Rowing and Canoeing Federation (SRCF), Hassan wuxuu go’aansaday inuu matalo Soomaaliya, wuxuuna iskaga baxay kooxaha waaweyn ee doonta ee Cardiff si uu diiradda u saaro hal doomood oo keliya (single scull).

“Inaad noqoto qofkii ugu horreeyay ee Soomaaliya u metela tartan caalami ah waa arrin aad u weyn, sababtoo ah waxay iftiimin doontaa xiriirka (federation)-ka si ay u soo saaraan ciyaartoy dooneed (rowers) oo badan,” ayuu Hassan ku daray.

Inkastoo Hassan uu hadda diiradda saarayo tartanka Poznan ee muddada gaaban, ka hor inta uusan u gudbin Tartanka Afrika ee bisha November iyo inuu isku dayo inuu galo sideeda ugu sarreeya Cardiff ee tartanka Welsh Boat Race sanadka dambe, hadana qorshihiisa mustaqbalka fog wuu is beddelay.

“Haddii aan sii fiicnaado, waxaan rabaa inaan ka qayb galo tartanka u-qalansiga Olombikada ee 2027. Waxaan rabaa inaan tago si aan u arko haddii aan tegi karo Olombikada — waa himilada ugu dambeysa. Laakiin isla markaa waa inaan shaqo raadsadaa,” ayuu yiri ardayga taariikhda iyo siyaasadda bartay.

Si kastaba oo ay wax u dhacaan mustaqbalkiisa ciyaareed, Hassan wuxuu leeyahay doonta wax badan ayey noloshiisa ka beddeshay.

“Waxay ii keentay waxyaabo badan. Waxaan heystaa caafimaad jidheed heer sare ah, waxaan helay saaxiibo aan nolosha oo dhan la saaxiibi doono — saaxiibo aanan filayn inaan heli lahaa haddii aanan ciyaartan gelin.”

“Isla markaa waxaan ku raaxaystay inaan barto ciyaar cusub — gaar ahaan ciyaar qof aniga ii eg oo asalkeyga ka yimid uusan badanaa helin fursad uu ku galo,” ayuu kusoo gabagabeeyay.
