⛳ A flag close to the edge of the green can make the shot look more inviting than it really is.

Before aiming directly at it, look at the miss around it.
☑️ Is there a bunker short?
☑️ A penalty area on one side?
☑️ Very little green beyond the hole?

The middle, or the wider side of the green, may leave a longer putt. It can also remove the biggest number from the hole.

Course management is not about avoiding every risk. It is about choosing the risk that fits the shot you actually have.

Before a golf trip, separate two things:

Two courses can be the same length and still ask for a completely different round. ⛳

🔹 Traditional ʟɪɴᴋꜱ golf developed on sandy coastal ground. Firm playing surfaces, exposed wind and natural contours bring bounce and roll into the shot.
🔹 ᴘᴀʀᴋʟᴀɴᴅ courses are usually inland. Trees, shaped fairways and more defined playing corridors often frame the route from tee to green.

These are typical characteristics, not rigid rules.

👆 The practical difference is simple: on firm links ground, the landing point may only be the beginning. You also need to read what happens after the first bounce.

⛳ Royal Lytham & St Annes sits half a mile from the sea, and yet you never actually see it.

What you do see are more than 170 pot bunkers, some deep enough to swallow a golfer whole, and a finishing stretch that has decided championships since 1926, when Bobby Jones played the shot of his life from a sandy waste on the 17th.

📅 From 29 July to 2 August, this legendary links hosts the 50th AIG Women's Open, one of the toughest tests in golf and one of the biggest weeks in the women's game this year.
