One of the biggest mistakes I see golfers make is trying to improve five different positions at once.

The golf swing lasts less than two seconds.

That’s not much time for your brain to consciously process multiple instructions.

Instead of trying to place different body parts into specific positions, focus on rehearsing movement that creates those positions.

Once that movement feels comfortable and repeatable, introduce the golf ball.

Remember:

Movement creates positions.

Not the other way around.

Great question by one of my followers : how do we take our range practice to the course. He says he’s been practicing more than ever but things haven’t translated. Are you in the same boat? Should I use more of my left or my right?? Golf coaches like us get this question all the time! I’ve definitely not put the debate to bed here but I guess ive started the ball rolling with an example I use all the time on my lesson tee . Many great instructors have talked about which side “ pulls “ “pushes” etc over time and a lot of their instruction have helped tons of golfers . The issue is that the information passed on over time has not been specific to the forces applied in the swing ( facts / science / physics / geometry ) the issue ( like most issues around sharing “ feels” ) is that the information shared is often geared towards the feel someone used to hit a successful golf shot, eg,

Extract from a video I created for a student who was having a lot of right hand grip and forearm issues at set up . When we are adjusting our hand position on the grip, it is critical that we ensure that the forearms are set in an ideal position to move during the swing and have the right grip to match up the face at impact.

Inspired by 2 lessons I gave this week to 2 students who have played golf for a long time. Not going to go into details as to what concepts they religiously followed throughout their golf lives ( clues in the first 20 seconds ) yes I think many of us golf coaches have been preaching the correct motion with head and body through the ball.. and I guess it doesn’t hurt to have another video talk about it . One of the short game set up tips that 2 of my coaches taught me early on in my career was to position the eyes in a way where you can see the front of the ball .
This helps you
- keep your weight/ pressure to your left throughout the swing
- helping you contact more of the ball first instead of the ground
Try this if you’re struggling with excessive ground first contact!
