Istanbul Trip 2026 completed! 🇹🇷
Aikido Shinju-Kai: Istanbul Friendship Bridge Seminar
[Part 2 of 2 album]

Our team of seven members has returned from a memorable journey to Istanbul, Turkey.
Philip Lee Shihan, Founder & Chief Instructor of Aikido Shinju-Kai, was invited to take classes at the Aikido Friendship Bridge Seminar from 4–6 September 2026. The training focused deeply on internal work: controlling the Centre, refining internal intention, and developing precise skeletal movement rather than relying on large muscular force.

Special thanks to Ayhan Kaya sensei for hosting this event and taking good care of the singapore team. We would also like to thank the various distinguished senseis: Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan, Jim Alvarez sensei, Isao Yoshikawa sensei

Outside the dojo, the group explored the beauty of Istanbul: the historic skyline, the Bosphorus, vibrant streets, and rich culture that leave a lasting impression. Great food and friends!

The team forged new friendships, deepened bonds with fellow practitioners, and strengthened the global Aikido community. The entire trip was carefully planned, filled with meaningful learning, and guided by local hosts across the city.
These international experiences continue to enrich our practice and our spirit. We look forward to welcoming more students and members on future Aikido Shinju-Kai journeys.

BEING ONE WITH THE SWORD — 剣と一つになる

At a certain point in our training, we begin to realise that the sword is no longer something we simply hold.

It becomes something we learn to become one with.

In the beginning, we concentrate on the hands — how to grip, how to cut, where to step.

As our understanding deepens, the lesson changes.

The hands become quieter.
The shoulders become softer.
The body begins to move as one.
And eventually, the sword becomes an extension of our centre.

This is where weapon training becomes higher learning in Aikido.

The sword is unforgiving. It reveals hesitation. It reveals poor posture. It reveals unnecessary tension. It shows us immediately when our ma-ai (間合い) is wrong, when our timing is late, or when our mind has become disconnected from our body.

Miyamoto Musashi wrote: “The way is in training.” — 道は稽古にあり

A simple phrase, yet one that becomes more meaningful the longer we practise.

There is no shortcut to understanding distance.
No shortcut to timing.
No shortcut to calmness under pressure.

We repeat the same movement again and again — not because we are trying to become better at swinging a wooden sword, but because through repetition, we are slowly refining ourselves.

This is where the relationship between Ken and Aiki becomes clearer.

When the sword moves from the centre, our empty-hand technique begins to change.

Irimi becomes more decisive.
Ma-ai becomes more instinctive.
Zanshin remains after the movement has ended.
Our posture becomes stronger without becoming rigid.
And our technique becomes simpler, because unnecessary movement begins to disappear.

Perhaps this is one of the greatest lessons of the sword:

The higher our level becomes, the less we should need to do.

Less force.
Less tension.
Less hesitation.
Less ego.

Until eventually there is no separation between the practitioner, the movement and the sword.

One centre.
One intention.
One movement.

That is why we continue returning to the fundamentals.

Not simply to learn how to use the sword… but to allow the sword to teach us how to practise Aikido.

剣を学び、己を学ぶ . Study the sword. Study oneself.

活到老,学到老.
Age is not an excuse. Just do within your body capability.
“Age” is merely another opponent, one that cannot be thrown by force, but only blended with through continuous practice.
When the body begins to slow, the mind that has trained daily remains sharp, fluid, and awake.
When the muscles grow quieter, the spirit that has never stopped seeking grows clearer.
Every time you step onto the mat, whether at twenty or at eighty….you renew the contract with life itself.
You refuse the soft death of stagnation.
You refuse the lie that says, “It is too late.”
Training does not merely preserve the body.
Training keeps the mind from freezing.
It keeps the heart from closing.
It keeps the path open.
In Aikido Shinjukai we do not chase youth.
We cultivate presence.
We polish the self until the years become nothing more than another layer of polish.
The body will do its best to follow a mind that refuses to stop growing.
That is true longevity: not the number of years lived, but the depth of life still being lived.
