The SMU Sailing Club was founded in 2004 by a group of good friends who enjoyed nothing more than to be out on the water together. Years later, the club has grown in size, our fleet has expanded and our sailors have created waves all over the world but the underlying principles of friendship, teamwork and passion have not changed. With the invaluable support of SMU’s Office of Student

Life (OSL), SMU Sailing has broken boundary after boundary going where no other university sports club in SMU has gone before. Over the years we have made many “friends of sailing” and have impressed others from all over the world with our enthusiasm, passion and eagerness to learn. Through numerous opportunities to organize, plan and run events, we aim to enhance the skills that can be taken off the water and brought into the work place. The SMU Sailing club is growing from strength to strength and the future definitely looks bright for us. The club currently owns 4 keelboats berthed at Raffles Marina and we use these to have regular water sessions on the weekends. The club also competes regularly in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia and has travelled to Greece, China and Australia for competitions. The SMU Sailing club is more than just a sports team.

How to better challenge yourself than sailing away from your responsibilities every weekend! 🌞

We welcome all with or without experience. We look for people with passion, sportsmanship and a heart to learn. 🥰

D-0 to CSC One Design Keelboat Sailing Championships⛵️🌊🥳
Introducing 2/2 of our Platu representatives and our last team: 💫 Team Ballast 💫 :)

At our helm we have experienced sailor Benoit (who packed his gloves all the way from Switzerland just for a taste of Singapore sailing). Every training you'll see him sipping on some ✨Evian✨ water, but during regattas he is the embodiment of total focus and concentration, silently calculating the best possible route to victory ✌🏼 See his spanking red adidas shorts? He's in competition mode! 🚨🏆

On the mains, our freshest sailor Charlotte 🥳 ! She knows no fear, as evident in her many encounters with SMUve’s 💥boom💥 Albiet new to the sport, don't underestimate her active trimming skills 🙌🏻 Whenever she's not sailing, Charlotte is spinning and running her handmade earring business💰🍦HUHU we're still waiting on our team earrings char ;)

At our jib we have our sailing babe #1 and COMPETENT jib trimmer Trisha! She has perfectly mastered the art manoeuvring without a sweat💦 Trisha is also our tactician of the boat, secretly formulating all forms of strategies to help us win 😏 Once, she may or may not have conspired to throw cockroaches🪳onto another competitor boat as a winning strategy! (oop 🤗)

Next, we have Don, our temporarily-retired jib trimmer turned pit mast as a result of his serial shoulder dislocating skills 🦹(ouch) Not only is he our competent pit mast, he is our trusty beehoon supplier 🥰 Let us observe a minute of silence in thanks for filling the stomachs of our starving sailors! SMU Sailing shall never know hunger again~ 🍝🥬🍳🍗

Last but not least, we have our bow woman Jadyn! Whenever she's not holding on for dear life every manoeuvre, she's enjoying that sweet upwind sea breeze 🌊🌬There's little to worry about her hoists and drops given her prior experience in flag raising 🇸🇬 (that is.. 8 years ago in pri school 🤭) With her trusty electric tape, sunnies 😎 and somewhat-accurate gust calls 🔊, we can count on her for swift roundings! 🙌🏻

D-5 to CSC One Design Keelboat Sailing Championships⛵️🌊🥳
Introducing 1/2 of our Platu representatives: Boat MADmen 🤡🤪

MADman no.1: Introducing Ivan, our helm who has been sailing since his Polytechnic days. We would love to compare his steering to that of a graceful orchestra conductor, but alas, it is not so.😔 But don’t be fooled by his clumsiness! Ivan controls the boat with great ferocity and a hunger to win, like a mighty horse galloping to the finishing line 🐎💨 sometimes, maybe at the expense of crew (jk).

MADman no.2: Meet Kimberly, our lovely mains trimmer who always has a smile on her face. She trims with confidence and expertise, ensuring our main sail always has a beautiful curve like the one on her lips 🥰. Thanks to our moodmaker, the vibe on our boat is always lively and energetic. However, she needs to stop fantasising so much about eating Zha Jiang Mian on the boat! 🤤

MADman no.3: Is this the Krusty Krab? 🤩 No…this is Patrick! Patrick is the STAR of our boat, he jib trims with such efficiency and strength, and flies the spin so beautifully that it appears he has 5 limbs. Legend has it the spin has never collapsed before 🙈 Note: Don’t leave him out of the water for too long, or he will start to sweat puddles. 🥵😳

MADman no.4: Gloria is our great pit/mast woman, the troubleshooter and in-charge of all our sail controls.⛵️With speed and agility like no other, she keeps everything moving on the boat with the flick of the wrist! If you are lucky, you may spot her head turning 360° as she simultaneously helps both the Jib and Bow. 🤯🦉

MADman no.5: Say hello to our own MOB queen! 👸🏻 Whether it is her aspiration to beat our alumni MOB king’s record or Ivan's secret grudge against her, this does not stop Euodia from executing her manoeuvres with steely determination 💪🏼💪🏼 Irregardless of boat heel or choppy waves, once the command to hoist is given, she is immediately on her feet and braving whatever is in her way to make sure our sails are up and flying.🏃🏻‍♀️

Introducing 2/2 of our J24 representatives: Team Temporary Fix 🛠👷🏻‍♂️

On the helm, we have Ryan. If he’s not on the boat, fret not! Our steady helm has not MOB but is simply swimming in the seas. Ps. That’s not trash being dragged but just Ryan enjoying life 🤪 Ryan is a jack of all trades. Not only can he swim AND helm, he is also the one who would give precise laser instructions for our trimmers to give the sails the perfect trim at the most opportune moments.

You might be wondering HUH? JIB WHERE GOT? Not only is Joshua always wrapped from head to toe, he moves about the boat like a true master - swiftly and deadly. He’s no sailor. Ninja 🥷🏻? Maybe 🤔 Joshua is also a knot enthusiast. He holds a repertoire of different knot tying methods that you’d never know you need.

On the mains, we have Raeann, who will be participating in her very first CSC. Raeann is not only our mains trimmer, but also our main deadweight 😮‍💨 Her bow line knots can miraculously turn into a work of rope entanglements 🙇🏻‼️

Our bow, Zola, is also bracing herself for her first CSC. She is ever-ready at the foredeck to zoooom and keep the spin but if a lizard appears…. she will most definitely zoom away faster than you can say Raise Spin🦎❌ Zola’s enthusiasm (and fear of lizards) will definitely tide the boat through whatever trials and tribulations 🤪

Thankfully, we have our most experienced, trusty and dependable pit mast. Steadfast, Rachel is always ready to aid at any situation. Her wealth of sailing knowledge never fails to impress us as she imparts us with wise and valuable race strat insights. We would definitely say she’s the brain of the boat but some may even say the only brain 🧠🥹

At the helm we have our freshie Abigail! Alias: pink blackcurrent 🙂 she is super talented and passed both ppcdl theory and practical in one try 👍🏼 legend has it all engines under smusailing’s assets all need just one pump to jump start under her responsibility 😅 her love of care for the whole crew (and their heads) is truly precious because safety is her no. 1 priority 🥰

At the mains we have our beloved alumni Christian! alias: well seasoned and aged blackcurrent 🙈 with his experience in the sport since he was a child, he can sail with his eyes closed! he learned how to sail before he learned how to walk (source:trust me bro) ⛵️ he overlooks everything on the boat and takes care of the undergrads on board like his own children 👶🏻 with him, our undergrads are sure to have an eventful and successful regatta!

At the jib we have resident gymbro Sean! Alias: over rip(p)ed blackcurrent 💪🏼 the jib and spin sheets are shivering in fear from his sheer strength as he sheets in and out with no hesitation and even no winch at all at times 😨 he loves to ask our helm for more pressure on his sails because he works best under pressure and pushes himself to the limit at all times 😎

At the pitmast we have our club xmm Renae! Alias: tiny but mighty blackcurrent 🐩 albiet the lightest on the boat, her weight calls are very relied on as they balance the boat both physcially and mentally……dont let her tiny appearance fool you, she can double up as any role while troubleshooting everything on the boat

At the bow, we have the silent but deadly Timothy! Alias: odd blackcurrent 🤡 he is so fast that the crew sometimes just cant help but stare in awe at how quick and swift his gybes are 🤩 if u havent seen someone running around on the deck, Timothy is a formidable bow that runs back and forth the mast and bow of the boat for maneuverers 🏃‍♂️ surprisingly, at the front of the boat where he is usually alone, he bumps into many things despite the great space he has to himself.
