CAPTClouds

CAPTClouds CAPTClouds is an education-based Overseas Learning Project (OSL) to Yunnan, China, that was pioneered in 2015. We have two key objectives for our project. Enjoy!

CAPTClouds'16 is a pioneer Overseas Service Learning Project in Kunming and Lijiang (Yunnan) this summer. First and foremost, we intend to explore the alarming disparity between city schools and village schools, whether it is in the form of teaching resources, standard of teachers or the curriculum. We will therefore be visiting Jin Kang Yuan Primary School (city school) as well as Liangmei Primar

y Schoo (village school). Secondly, our team seeks to introduce the idea of a holistic learning environment to the schools through themed workshops and interest-based activities that are interactive in nature. The over-arching theme of our project revolves around the notion of holistic learning. The education system in China is largely academic-based and there has been little exposure of extra-curriculum activities to enhance the children's learning. Furthermore, much learning is conducted in a classroom setting and there has been minimal interactive-based activities. This is unlike in Singapore where there is a significant focus on all-rounded learning in our education system. The success of learning beyond the classroom has been apparent in recent years and there are social issues which formal education is unable to address. Our team has identified several key themes to shape our non-academic activities:
(1) Character Development: To guide these children to become morally upright and responsible citizens in the future. (2) Cultivation of passion: To expose them to various hobbies, such as the sports and the arts, with the hope that they would be able to generate interest in them. The aim of this is to contructively engage their time as well as for the children to find something they are passionate for in life. (3) Teaching of important life skills: To expose them to practical skills which they would not learn through their academics and would find useful in the future. All in all, we feel these themes would encapsulate what would be most essential for the children in Yunnan. Lastly, we hope that this page would serve as an effective platform for us to (1) raise awareness of the various communities in Yunnan, China and to (2) share our thoughts on the valuable experiences we will be gaining throughout this Youth Expedition Project (YEP) journey. (:

HI CAPTAINS!

We're Shaun and Jia Hui, Project Directors for CAPT Yunnan Overseas Service Learning (OSL) 2016. In May this year, our team visited two schools in Yunnan as part of our project. This included a school in a relatively rural area in Lijiang and a school in the city of Kunming. We would like to share our Yunnan experiences with all CAPTains and have planned two sessions to do so!

1) Booth at CAPT Affair (Thursday 11 August 7-10pm)
2) The Yunnan Experience (Friday 12 August, Either 12-2pm or 2-4pm): Through a series of activities and sharing, we hope to raise awareness of our project and the culture of this beautiful country. At the same time, we would be engaging you guys in a discussion of how to manage expectations of an OSL trip! (:

The Yunnan Experience is on a sign-up and first-come-first-serve basis and you can do so via this link!

Because our trip does not just end in Yunnan. CAPTClouds strikes back with our local engagement in partnership with the Chinese Development Association Council (CDAC). We invited upper primary kids over to College of Alice and Peter Tan (CAPT) for an afternoon of engagement and learning where our day centered around the theme of Financial Literacy. Great to be back servicing the community after 2 months of hiatus!

Please look forward to our Awareness Week where we will be sharing more about our trip with our fellow CAPTains in NUS CAPT :)

Service Day 3 @ Jing Kang Yuan Primary School
City School in Kunming, Yunnan
27 May - Theme: Innovative Thinking
Last day of service we encouraged the kids to use their innovative thinking to solve problems. Build-A-Rollercoaster using simple materials, we see that each group of students have their own unqiue way of building their structure. Each kid is unique ad special in their own ways. During our break, we engaged in a Friendly Soccer Match with coaches from Africa. Lastly, we danced to the song of "找朋友" (Finding a Friend) together. This day marked the end of our OSL in Yunnan and we are grateful to have found so many young nd old friends on this journey :)
