After the reign of Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty(1795), China encountered a succession of economic and political crises that shake the foundation of the empire. They were prompted by famine, droughts and floods, as well as economics by sharp increases in the price of grain. In 1813, the Eight Trigrams uprising of the Heavenly Order(Tianli Jiao) a combination of branches of earlier movements (Li Gua
, Zhe Gua, Wanglun uprising, White Lotus uprising, Clear Water etc) broke out across Zhili(HebeiTianjin),Shandong and Henan Provinces. Feng Keshan was one of the leaders of that rebellion, whom later along with colleagues Tang Youyi and Yang Jing, where kept in hiding from officials by fellow members of the Tianli movement, Zhang Jingxiu, Liu Shang and Duan Luoxu. All of them being expert martial arts fighters, they combined their efforts and developed the system of Chuojao. Feng Keshan being the leader and most skilled of the group was often respected as the founder (various accounts of his assasination in 1814 but also escape in hiding until 1848)
Since they all practiced very many skills, Chuojiao is very comprehensive and inclusive martial art. There are the fast hands of Bafan Quan, the throwing skills of Baoding, the ground combat of Ditang, the distant skills of Huaquan, power of Jingang, the lethal kicks of Jiu Zhizi, the Jiang family and Yang family Spears, the Kunlun Sabers, the Green Dragon and Qimen the swords, and many more. Feng and/or his group would teach around the Hengshui and Baoding jurisdictions in Hebei province, teaching different methods in each location, with Raoyang and Li Counties being most prominent. In Raoyang, Zhao Laocan, in Li County Liu Guanlan, Wei Laofang and Wei Changyi were the principal progenitors of Chuojiao. Liu Guanlan from Li county became well known as he established a Logistics Security Bureau where Chuojiao was applied in training its members and helped to propagate Chuojiao further. Afterwards the various methods of Chuojiao were disseminated across different villages in Baoding prefecture (Li County, Gaoyang County) and beyond, as many retired back to their home or adopted villages. As a result by the third generation there were very many practitioners. Some served in other Logistics Bureau in distant locations, some joined the imperial forces, others were part of the Yihetuan (Boxer Rebellion). Even by the fourth generation they also participated in the local militia / warlords and domestic battlers including the Sino- japanese war, many lives were lost and as did many practitioners end their lives in protecting their nation. Given the origins and that the first generation practitioners were part of the Tianli jiao, our school is called Tianli Chuojiao.
