STEP 1: Skate
In skate position, the entire body is tilted as one in a 45 degree angle. The forward right arm is relaxed, the head is facing down towards the pool floor and the left back arm is at the front of pocket. This skate position is a straight line from forward right hand’s fingertips to the right foot toes, and is the gliding phase of freestyle swimming.
STEP 2: Triangle
Triangle is the recovery phase of freestyle swimming and as the term suggests we try to keep it as relaxed as possible. The focus of the triangle is on the elbow movement of the arm. As you maintain your right hand skate position, allow your left elbow to lead the way forward into a triangle while keeping the forearms relaxed.
STEP 3: Rotate
Hips, shoulders work together as one to rotate, while the arms follow. The main driving force is from the hips, as the hips and shoulders rotate as one. The movement involves the arms being led by the rotation of the hips and shoulders.
STEP 4: Pocket
In right skate, recover left arm. As the left wrist or forearm enters the water, begin to rotate and extend the left arm and stroke the right arm back to pocket simultaneously. The right arm stroke should end straight back, with hands at the front of an imaginary pant’s front pocket. This focus will help you focus on finishing your stroke.
Repeat the steps: Skate >>> Triangle >>> Rotate >>> Pocket
