Today, 11 years ago I said yes to the best contract a man can have. No hurricanes, bureaucracy, bad people or whatever hardship crossed our path could stand in the way. We have had the best time and a lot of good times ahead of us.
Thank you for being the best wife.

Tomorrow we will arrive in our home harbour. The last days we sailed in the archipelago and it was impressive.

In Skillinge, Skåne, our friends Valerie and Francois, whom we met in Wasa harbour in Stockholm about ten years ago, came onboard to travel with us along the east coast! 🥰🤗

But the dogs, and especially Daisy, have been a bit seasick on the open sea so we decided that me and the dogs would go home to Kvarnen.

Our friend Fon had just arrived with our car which he had been driving from Holland all the way to Skåne 😃💞 wonderful guy!

So in Åhus the three of us jumped ship while the rest of the crew will continue towards our new home harbour outside of Stegeborg.

Depending on the weather it will take them a week or two to get there…⛴️

We have had a wonderful time, and many more adventures are waiting for us on our lovely Hoppetossa, but for now it feels quite good to be back in Kvarnen 🏡

Yesterday we crossed over to Sweden😃

We were on our way to Rödvik in Denmark where we were planning on staying until Sunday to wait for a weather window.
Hard winds were forecast for the Saturday.

But with the sea like a mirror in front of us , not a cloud in the sky and two dogs happily snoring on deck we decided to continue on our way towards Sweden… 🛥️

And eight hours later we were in the small, beautiful village of Skåre near Trelleborg in Skåne.

A wonderful day at sea 🌊 💙

The day before yesterday we crossed over from Kiel to the small and lovely village Orth (64 people and 5 restaurants) on the German island Fehmarn.
We had quite a hard wind and it took us about 7 hours, but it is a very beautiful place and well worth a visit!

Puttgarden is another wellknown town on Fehmarn that you might have heard of.
A LOT of ferries are going from there to Rödby in Denmark

We stayed one night in Orth and the next morning we made that crossing to Rödby🇩🇰
For the ferries the journey takes
45 minutes - for us about 5 hours! 😅
With departures every half hour there is a constant coming and going of big ships in Rödby…..⛴️⛴️⛴️
But 2020 the big project to build the Fehmarn Bält tunnel started and it will completely change the way of transport (and nature) here.

It is an enormous project, actually the biggest infrastructure project in Europe, and with its 18 km and 40 m underwater it will be the longest submerged tunnel in the world for both cars and trains.
It is estimated to be open for traffic in 2029 but with a possible delay to 2032.

Instead of 45 min with the ferry the tunnel will take 10 min by car and 7 min by train.

The nature in the waters around Germany and Denmark is wonderful, we have seen Porpoises (Tumlare) or maybe it was Bottlenosed Dolphins (Öresvin)🐬🦭, seals and a myriad of migratory birds… 🥰

This morning we continued to the town Nykobing and now we are not so far from Sweden anymore….😊

We have just got out of the lock at the end of the Kiel kanal and are now in the Baltic Sea! Yeeah!😃

The kanal is 98 km long so we stayed about halfway in a very nice marina in Rendsburg.
Since it was bad weather we decided to spend one day extra there to catch up with some repairs, do the laundry and stock up with food.

The Kiel Kanal is one of the world’s most frequented artificial waterways with an average of 32 000 ships per year!
That is about 90 ships per day so you can be quite sure about meeting some of the real big guys on the water.

Today was probably not the best day to go through the lock.
We had a very strong wind in our back and, being Saturday, a myriad of other boats with the same idea as us! And they were in a big hurry…..
These locks are very big and they are not nice to manoeuvre. You have to get down (don’t ever jump) on a very slippery pontoon in order to thread your ropes through rings, and the pontoon will then travel with you up or down.
This channel was constructed between 1887 and 1895 and by the look of the locks I sincerely doubt that anything has been done to the them since then!😏

Because of the hurry today one person managed to fall between the ship and the platform. It went well but it is easy to hurt yourself here if you are not careful.
The lock is very big so there’s no risk that you will be left outside. No need to hurry!

The weather is quite bad, cold and with hard and icy winds 🥶 so we will stay in Kiel tonight and see what the weather is like tomorrow.

We have spent a night in the Hamburg harbour.
Quite wobbly with a lot of waves from the huge cargo ships, freighters,
ferry’s and the many tourist boats.⛴️🚢🛳️
It actually reminded us a bit of our time in the Wasa harbour in Stockholm 😅

Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany after Berlin, with a population of almost two million people. Five million if you include the whole metropolitan region.
And the enormous harbour is the third largest in Europe after Rotterdam and Antwerp!

Of course it’s not enough with just one day and night to get to know a city but you can get a feeling about it.
I (Jill) think it is a very loud and interesting place with a kind of chaotic mix of old and new, industrial and beautiful tossed together haphazardly! I like it!

This morning we started early, and with the tide in our back we made such good speed that we decided to continue a bit further than we had planned and go through the lock to the Kiel kanal.
On the other side of the lock lies the little town Brunnsbuttel where we will spend the night and tomorrow we will continue with our quest to get out of Germany😏😃

Today we went into a lock that took us 36 meters down to the river Elbe!

The Scharnebeck shiplift is a wonder and a real joy to use!😃
(Never thought I would say that about a lock, ha ha)

You go in with your boat, put your rope around a bollard, sit down, and vips-the whole lock with boats and water and all will take you up or down a maximum 38 meters, depending on the water level in the Elbe at the time.

It was built in 1974 and was at that time the largest shiplift in the world. And there are about 500 0000 visitors per year.
Total moving weight of the through with water is approx 11 800 tons!
And it takes just three minutes to lift or lower it! Wow 😅

Now we are continuing on the Elbe towards Hamburg…⚓️
