Interesting article from Norway. The balance between enjoying the outdoors and overusing it is quickly approaching in many areas. Then again, the way Scandinavians and Americans use and interact with nature is much different as well. It’s a good topic to read up on.

Think before you tromp.

This map shows the number of state listed plants recorded in each of the 88 counties. Lucas County has the most with 161 rare plants. Why so many in Lucas County? Lucas County contains the Oak Openings Region, a 130 square mile area of sand deposits that includes sand dunes, sand barrens, twigrush wet meadows. Irwin Prairie, Kitty Todd and Campbell state nature preserves protects some of the best remaining examples of this globally important region.

The other 100+ species counties include Ashtabula, Portage and Summit counties in northeast Ohio which have some of the last examples of peatlands, bogs and fens. Erie County has prairies, beaches and coastal wetlands. And in southern Ohio, Adams County has xeric limestone prairies, post oak openings and Appalachian forests.
