Your elbow position decides whether you train chest, triceps... or injure your shoulders.

🔴 Elbows flared ~90°

This position increases shoulder internal rotation and anterior shoulder stress. Over time, that's where irritation and injury often begin.

🟢 Moderate elbow angle (~30-45°)

This balances the load between the chest, shoulders, and triceps, the position most lifters should use for strong and safe pressing.

🟢 Elbows close to the torso

Now the triceps take over. This is essentially a close-grip press and a powerful way to build stronger lockout strength. Small adjustments in elbow position change the joint torque and muscle emphasis dramatically.
