In the Netherlands, 11- and 12-year-olds take an official exam, not in maths, but in cycling.

It's called the verkeersexamen, the traffic exam, and it's meant for pupils in the last years of primary school.

First comes a theory test about traffic rules and signs. Then the practical part: children cycle a set route through their own town or village.

Volunteers stand along the route and watch closely. Do they look over their shoulder? Signal with their arm? Stop at the right places?

Pass, and you get a certificate. For many Dutch kids it marks the start of cycling to secondary school on their own, sometimes many kilometres each way.

Not a small thing in a country with more bicycles than people.

The photo shows children with their bikes at a traffic exam in 1953. Generations later, the tradition is still going strong.

£5,000 penalties for puddle splashing as careless drivers soak bike commuters 😱

Splashing pedestrians is illegal, but targeting or carelessly soaking cyclists with a wave of puddle water carries even stricter scrutiny. Under Section 3 of the Road Traffic Act, driving without reasonable consideration for other road users can result in a £100 fixed penalty, which can escalate to a £5,000 fine and up to nine penalty points if taken to court by outraged cyclists equipped with helmet cameras.

Undercover police on bicycles catch drivers leaving too little room 😅💸

Police forces across the country are deploying undercover officers on bicycles equipped with high-definition cameras to catch dangerous drivers. Motorists who fail to leave the mandated 1.5-metre minimum passing distance are instantly radioed ahead to waiting interceptor teams. Offenders are pulled over and handed immediate careless driving penalties of £100 and three penalty points for endangering vulnerable road users.
