*TONIGHT!* (…and every Saturday!)
Theme of this week’s class: Whole-Body Listening
** What is Contact Improvisation? **
Contact Improvisation (CI) is a movement practice rooted in shared weight, touch, and embodied awareness. Through improvisation and shared movement exploration, we cultivate presence, curiosity, creativity, and trust in the unknown. CI can be practiced with physical contact between dancers, or solo, in relationship with the floor, gravity, space, and oneself.
CI practice softens and opens the body, mind, and heart. Through organic, mindful movement, the body becomes more supple and responsive. Through improvisation, the mind becomes more intuitive and playful. Through connection and community, the heart is nourished.
** Guided Class **
The guided class includes embodiment practices, solo movement explorations, and partnering/group exercises to help you arrive fully in your body, deepen your movement awareness, and prepare for the jam. It offers a space to explore different aspects of contact improvisation in a supportive environment. Bring your questions and curiosities about CI!
** Open Jam **
The jam is an open space for collective movement research and spontaneous, relational dance-making, where we dive into deep, embodied presence with ourselves and each other. It’s a focused, co-creative space where we practice together with little to no guidance, following our aliveness and what’s emerging in the moment. Sometimes we dance with music; sometimes in silence.
** Everyone is Welcome **
All levels of experience are warmly welcome. If you’re new to contact improvisation, joining the guided class will help you feel oriented and supported before entering the jam. Part of CI practice is learning about movement by witnessing each other’s dancing with openness and attention. Throughout the evening, you are welcome to move, witness, and rest at whatever rhythm feels right for you.
No preregistration needed — come as you are.
