Cleaning a pre-owned Jaguar by Harry Dabbs.

It came in looking dull. Not damaged — just untouched for a while, with dust settled deep into the stitching and a layer of residue across the seat that a quick wipe simply wouldn’t remove.

The order matters more than the products:

→ Remove dry dust from the seams and around the hardware
→ Clean the leather, then let it dry
→ Use a cotton bud along the stitch lines, where a cloth only reaches the surface
→ Clean the hardware, keepers and billets by hand
→ Condition last — a thin layer, carefully worked into the leather

The stitching takes the longest. It also tells you the most, because dirt and residue collect there long before they become obvious anywhere else.

By the end, the natural grain becomes visible again and the depth of the black returns. Same leather — nothing added, just properly cleaned and conditioned.

The tree, panels and serial number were checked before any of this started.

This one had been sitting a while before it reached us. You can see it in the first seconds of the video.

A dry, ventilated space is the right place to keep a saddle. It stops mould. It does not keep the leather supple on its own, and air that is too dry pulls moisture out of leather over time. Storage is one part of the routine. It is not the routine.

The part that gets skipped more often: cleaning before conditioning.

Conditioner does not absorb through dust and old residue. It sits on top and seals it in. So the leather gets cleaned, then it gets time to dry, and only then does it get fed.

An 18” Prestige Michel Robert just arrived at our shop. If you know this model — you know why that’s exciting.
This is one of the most respected Italian jumping saddles ever made — and in this size, they don’t come up often.
The Michel Robert was developed in collaboration with the legendary French rider Michel Robert — a man who competed at the highest level for decades and understood exactly what a jumping saddle needs to do at speed.

The 18” seat is generous without being bulky. It suits taller riders or those with longer legs who feel cramped in a 17.5”. Despite the larger seat, the saddle maintains excellent close contact — you don’t lose feel just because you need more room.
Tree width 33cm places it in the medium-narrow range — well suited for sport horses with defined withers and a more refined build.
