EVS Replay Basics: What Are Post-Roll and Guardbands?
When working with EVS replay, two features that can give both the director and the replay operator more confidence are post-roll and guardbands.
They solve two completely different problems.
Post-roll protects the playout. Guardbands protect your ability to edit the clip later.
What is Post-Roll?
Imagine you are playing a very important clip during a live show, concert, film-based production, or another broadcast where every frame matters.
The clip is approaching its end and you start counting down for the director:
“Three… two… one… zero.”
The problem is what happens when the clip reaches zero.
Normally, when the clip reaches its OUT point, playback stops. If the director is still on your EVS output, even for a few frames too long, the audience may see a freeze frame.
That's exactly what we want to avoid.
This is where post-roll becomes useful.
Post-roll allows the video to continue rolling for a short period after the defined end of the clip. Depending on your setup, this could be:
15 frames
20 frames
1 second
or another configured duration
In many workflows, this additional material is played without audio.
So instead of worrying that the picture will freeze exactly when your countdown reaches zero, you have a small safety margin.
You can confidently count:
“Three… two… one… zero.”
The director can cut away exactly at zero, while EVS continues to provide moving pictures for a short period.
Why does Post-Roll matter?
It gives the director confidence.
The director knows that reaching zero doesn't immediately mean a frozen picture on the EVS output.
This can be particularly important when playing carefully prepared packages, concert elements, show segments, or other clips where the director needs to stay with the EVS until the very last frame.
Post-roll is essentially a safety cushion after the end of your playout.
What Are Guardbands?
Guardbands solve a completely different problem.
Imagine that you create a clip that is exactly 10 seconds long.
Later, you realize:
“I actually need another two seconds before my IN point.”
Or perhaps:
“My OUT point is too early. I need another three seconds at the end.”
Without additional recorded material surrounding the clip, you would have a problem.
This is where guardbands become extremely useful.
Think of guardbands as additional material stored before and after your actual clip.
For example, imagine:
5 sec guardband + 10 sec clip + 5 sec guardband
Your actual saved clip is still 10 seconds long.
But you effectively have access to 20 seconds of material:
5 seconds before the IN point → 10-second clip → 5 seconds after the OUT point
Those additional five seconds on either side give you room to modify the clip later.
Importantly, if you simply play the clip without changing anything, it will still play for exactly 10 seconds. The five seconds before and the five seconds after are not automatically included in the playout. They are only cushions—extra material available in case you later decide to move the IN point earlier or the OUT point later and extend the clip.
Why Are Guardbands Important?
Suppose you saved your clip and then realize that your IN point wasn't perfect.
Instead of creating the clip again, you can move the IN point earlier.
You might extend it by:
1 second → 2 seconds → 3 seconds → up to the available guardband duration.
The same applies to your OUT point.
If you realize that your clip ends too early, you can move the OUT point later and use the additional material contained within the guardband.
The amount of additional material available depends on the guardband duration configured in the EVS setup.
This gives the replay operator flexibility even after the original clip has been created.
Post-Roll vs. Guardbands
Although both features provide additional material around a clip, their purposes are very different.
Post-roll is about playout.
It gives the director a safety margin at the end of a clip so that the EVS output doesn't immediately freeze when the clip reaches zero.
Guardbands are about editing.
They give the replay operator additional material before and after the saved clip, allowing the IN and OUT points to be adjusted later.
An easy way to remember the difference is:
Post-roll gives confidence to the director. Guardbands give confidence to the replay operator.
The director knows they can stay with your EVS until zero.
The replay operator knows that even after saving the clip, there is still some room to change their mind.
And in live production, those few extra frames—or those few extra seconds—can make a very big difference.
