The founder of Kyokushin Karate, 🗾 Japan
often misheard as "Kyon Cushion," was the Korean-Japanese martial artist Masutatsu "Mas" Oyama (1923–1994), who developed this influential style of full-contact karate, known for its rigorous training and powerful, realistic fighting in the 1950s and '60s, establishing the International Karate Organization (IKO-1) in 1964.
This video provides an overview of the history of Kyokushin Karate:
Key Facts About Mas Oyama & Kyokushin:
Origin: Born Choi Yeung-eui in Korea, Oyama moved to Japan and became a legendary martial artist.
Philosophy: Kyokushin, meaning "The Ultimate Truth," focuses on pushing physical and mental limits through intense training and bare-knuckle, full-contact sparring.
Development: Oyama founded the style after World War II, seeking to create a karate that emphasized real combat and strength, contrasting with less practical forms.
Legacy: He established the International Karate Organization (IKO) in 1964, and Kyokushin grew into one of the world's largest martial arts organizations, spreading across continents.
