Jason Collins, the first openly gay active player in NBA history, died at age 47 after battling Stage 4 glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. His family confirmed he passed away surrounded by loved ones after an eight-month fight with the disease.
Collins made history in 2013 when he publicly came out while still an active NBA player, becoming a groundbreaking figure not only in basketball but in all major American men’s professional sports. Over a 13-season NBA career, he played for teams including the New Jersey Nets, Boston Celtics, Atlanta Hawks, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Washington Wizards.
Tributes poured in across the basketball world. Former teammate Jason Kidd called him a “pioneer,” while NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said Collins’ “impact and influence extended beyond basketball.” Fans and players remembered him as courageous, kind, and a symbol of inclusion and authenticity.
A tribute to Jason Collins:
“More than a basketball player, he became a voice for courage, acceptance, and truth.
Jason Collins opened doors for countless athletes to live honestly and proudly.
His legacy will forever be bigger than the game. Rest in peace, trailblazer.”
