HAPPY QC BIKE DAY, MGA KA-PADYAK!

“Biking has gained popularity in the Philippines over the past few years, peaking during the pandemic. However, safety remains a major concern among cyclists.

“Such concerns raise a serious question: Are existing bike lanes well designed to provide safe and comfortable transportation?”

SAME CORNER. VERY DIFFERENT FEELING.

The top photo shows a street you just endure. Sometimes you rush, dodge poles, squeeze past clutter, and step into traffic because the sidewalk barely works. There’s no shade, no place to pause, no signal that you belong there. You’re simply trying to get through.

Now look at the bottom photo. The same corner lets you slow down. You can walk beside someone, sit for a moment, and feel safe crossing the street. Trees, light, and space change everything. Nothing magical here. Just a choice to put people first.

These are the same streets. But only one feels like it was made for everyday life. So why do we accept the first version as “normal”? And which one feels like it was made for you?

THE BILLBOARDS GOT CLEARER AND THE ROADS GOT WIDER

2025 vs 2022. Same part of the SLEX but completely different setting.

What used to be a shaded expressway with cultivated trees for over a decade has changed to exposed concrete and metal with a wide open sky.

According to a Top Gear Philippines report in 2023 a total of 8,766 trees were decided to be cut down with a permit given by the authorities along South Luzon expressway to make way for a request of the Department of Transportation, TRB SMC SLEX Corp road widening project.

Of these,
✅ 7,237 were planted trees
✅1,529 were naturally grown

Many of them were native species that were planted by the DENR as part of the government’s reforestation effort in 2010 to 2012 to improve the microclimate of the expressway.

In 2025, trees are gone.

So are the environmental benefits they quietly provided.
✅Cooling shade.
✅Air filtration.
✅Noise reduction.
✅Habitat for urban biodiversity.

What now dominates the view is open, unobstructed roadside exposure, including large advertising structures that are far more visible than before.

This invites a legitimate public question, not an accusation:
Was road widening the only outcome of this decision, or did commercial visibility also benefit from the removal of roadside trees?

Tree cutting takes days. Reforestation takes decades. Public trust takes even longer.

If this intervention was necessary, transparency requires that we also ask:
Where is the long term replacement plan?

How will lost ecological services be restored?

How will future infrastructure projects balance mobility with environmental responsibility?

Development that forgets ecology repeats mistakes.
Progress without memory becomes expensive.
