EX-DND CHIEF: MARCOS ADMINISTRATION UNPREPARED TO RESPOND TO FOREIGN TENSIONS
Former Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Norberto Gonzales
said the government appears unprepared to respond to the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, as some Overseas Filipino Workers in Dubai are calling for immediate government assistance.
“Right now, we don’t know what is happening to our country. It seems the situation is not being properly addressed, which is why there is no clear action,” according to Norberto Gonzales, Former DND Chief.
This was the statement of former Defense Secretary and Chairman of the Partido Demokratiko Sosyalista ng Pilipinas, Norberto Gonzales, regarding the response of the B**gbong Marcos administration to the escalating tensions in the Middle East.
In an exclusive interview with SMNI News, Gonzales expressed disappointment with the current administration, saying it failed to issue early advisories to Overseas Filipino Workers regarding the brewing conflict. As a result, many Filipinos are now caught in the unrest and placed at risk.
“Even before the actual bombings carried out by Israel and America, we had already seen for weeks that U.S. aircraft carriers were positioning and Israel was preparing. The whole world knew something was going to happen. That should have been anticipated, especially by us, because we have many countrymen in those areas. We should have been pre-emptive and started preparing immediately,” Gonzales added.
“But I don’t know. We have not read in the news or seen on social media any indication that our government was preparing,” he added.
Meanwhile OFWs have expressed concern.
“At the moment, I haven’t heard of any assistance from the government. I haven’t received any updates,” according to Karen, OFW, Dubai.
“It’s a bit scary this morning because we’ve been hearing explosions here, so it’s frightening to go outside,” Jay, OFW, Dubai said.
“As of now, there is still no assistance,” he added.
Gonzales emphasized that government expenses increase whenever it responds late to problems instead of acting early. “Our country has a unique situation because Filipinos are present all over the world. That was one of my recommendations when I was running for office — we need to be very observant of major global developments because preparation is crucial. If you react late, costs grow bigger and it becomes more dangerous for our fellow Filipinos,” he said.
OFWs are appealing to the government for preparedness measures.
“If the situation really escalates into serious conflict, there should be shelters for Filipinos, ready food supplies, and emergency preparations,” Karen added.
“For now, I hope there are standby assistance measures in place. For example, if a disaster happens here in Dubai, there should already be prepared shelters and food assistance for our fellow Filipinos. And if we are allowed to return to the Philippines, there should be transportation ready to bring us home,” Jay added.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the concerns raised, as tensions in the Middle East continue to unfold.
