A Filipina adult film actress was once a figure skating champion.

Melissa Bulanhagui’s story took a different path when she gave up her Olympic dream due to a lack of funding.

The Filipina-American previously received support from the United States as a figure skater. She later chose to represent the Philippines instead, resulting in her becoming a two-time national figure skating champion.

Behind these achievements, however, were major financial hurdles. She stated that she had to fund herself while competing for the Philippines.

She alleged that she never received a Philippine team uniform, had to pay for her own travel and training expenses, and was not sent to any Olympic qualifying tournaments.

She eventually let go of her figure skating dreams and retired in 2015.

She then entered the adult film industry, where she is now known professionally as Jada Kai.

"I came here from Team USA to compete as a Filipino national, hoping to prove that I was the best in the country, and I did that twice," she said.

As Filipinos, we should support our athletes—win or lose. Just having a team represent us on the international stage is a massive victory in itself.

We forget that not every nation has the resources, the developmental programs, or the raw talent to even step onto the global stage.

So why do we keep bashing our own? What’s with the constant hate? Has dragging our athletes down become part of our sports culture?

If you can't be a supportive fan, at least choose to be a better Filipino for those carrying our flag.

Don’t worry, many are still proud of you, Gilas! Salamat sa pag representa sa Pilipinas!

Tatagos ba ang Gilas ngayon sa China?

In 2022, Gilas made a shocking victory over the Chinese home team at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

The home team lost by a single point (77-76) under Justin Brownlee’s back-to-back, highly contested three-point shots in the final minutes of the game.

The game was sort of an unbelievable feat, the Philippines overcame a 20-point deficit, making a legendary comeback and eliminate China in the semifinals.

Today, China has sent its best national team roster to redeem themselves from the “ghost of Hangzhou.”

The Chinese team has a real shot at defeating Gilas, as they are only facing what many people call the Philippines' “Team B.”

Honestly, it is an understatement for people to brand this squad as the ‘second team’, as they are highly capable of winning the gold medal.

The all-Filipino roster of Gilas still features many of the PBA’s best players.
