25 Years Later, Epondulan Chases JRU’s Unfinished Championship Dream

Twenty-five years ago, Ernani “Nani” Epondulan came within one victory of helping Jose Rizal University end its long NCAA championship drought.

The NCAA Season 77 MVP helped lead the Heavy Bombers to the Finals in 2001, but JRU ultimately fell short.

Now, Epondulan is back, this time as head coach.

“I failed to give the championship to my alma mater before. I'm hoping and praying na with the new assignment they gave me, matupad ko na ’yun,” Epondulan said in an earlier interview.

Coming off three preseason championship titles, JRU entered Season 102 with growing expectations. But Epondulan continues to keep his team grounded.

“I instilled in my players that we’re not strong, that we’re still underdogs, so they don’t get complacent,” he said.

That mindset has carried into Season 102. The Heavy Bombers have opened their campaign 2-0, securing victories over the Mapúa Cardinals and the Benilde Blazers.

It is only the beginning of a long season, but for Epondulan, every victory brings JRU another step closer to a goal that has remained unfinished for 25 years.

STILL UNBEATEN. 💣🔥

It came down to the final moments, but the JRU Light Bombers held their ground.

In a nail-biting battle against the DLSU Greenies, the Light Bombers escaped with a 78–76 victory to keep their undefeated run alive in NCAA Season 102! 🏀

Close call. Tough fight. Same result.

Another W for the Light Bombers. Undefeated and counting. 💛💙
