In the heart of Albay, a group of media practitioners has found a refreshing way to unwind, bond, and stay fit โ through basketball. What started as a simple weekend pastime has now evolved into a full-fledged league known as the ๐๐น๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฎ-๐ช๐๐ฆ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ธ๐ฒ๐๐ฏ๐ฎ๐น๐น ๐๐น๐๐ฏ.
The idea took shape at the DPWH Albay 1st Engineering District, where Noris Mingoy of Brigada News FM Legazpi began inviting fellow media professionals to casual Sunday basketball games. What started as a small circle of friends soon grew into a consistent group of players who couldnโt resist the thrill of the court every Sunday afternoon, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Among the regulars were the lively teams from Ako Bicol Online TV and Tabang Ora Mismo, led by Norisโs close friend Nomer Corporal. Their dedication and consistency caught the attention of veteran advisers Koyah Onin and Peter Encisa of Radyo Siram, who later encouraged Noris to formalize the games into a league.
After several discussions about the structure and spirit of the tournament, the group decided it was time to give their budding community an identity. Thatโs when FaFa-WISH was born โ a name with a story and a smile.
โFaFaโ symbolizes health, good living, and camaraderie โ qualities that the players embody both on and off the court. Meanwhile, โWISHโ stands for the dream to fulfill all the qualities of a โPAPAโ โ a slang term affectionately used to describe a strong, confident, and respectable gentleman.
The leagueโs first tournament features four teams, with plans to make it an annual event. More than competition, the FaFa-WISH league aims to promote a healthy lifestyle and unity among Albayโs media practitioners, regardless of their political opinions or network affiliations.
โOn-air, we may argue about politics. But on the court, itโs all about teamwork, assists, defense, and the occasional turnover.โ
In every gathering, everyone make sure that every game is filled with laughter โ but often, Noris Mingoy is sneaking in jokes about handsome actors or stories of โLOVEโ โ is he referring to a politician and life between fast breaks.
Currently serving as League Commissioner, Noris oversees the operations with guidance from the leagueโs advisers on decision-making and finances. The roster of eligible players includes broadcasters, technicians, drivers, janitors, and even information officers from both government and private institutions โ a true mix of the media community in action.
Looking ahead, the organizers plan to expand the league next year, introducing new events such as womenโs volleyball, further broadening the family that FaFa-WISH has built.
From microphones to basketballs, the Albay MEDIA FaFa-WISH Basketball Club proves that unity, fitness, and friendship can coexist โ even among those whose voices often clash on air. Because at the end of the day, when the buzzer sounds, what matters most is not who wins, but the bonds formed and the wish to keep the game โ and the camaraderie โ alive.
