In 2012, Spandits began with a conversation between two friends, a pair of imported tights, and probably a little too much confidence.
Kelley said, “There has to be a better option.” Sarah replied, “I bet we can make them better.”
At the time, we were one of the only companies making printed tights in the United States. We barely knew how online ordering worked when our first real order came in from Chicago — purple and white “Wind Tunnel” tights. We honestly weren’t even sure the order was legitimate, but we made them and shipped them anyway.
Little by little, this tiny idea became real. Over the years, Spandits grew from printed tights into shorts, skirts, dresses, winter gear, hats, neckwarmers, and headbands — all shaped by customer feedback, experimentation, and a desire to make pieces people would truly live in. We partnered with incredible seamstresses here in Maine, sourced better fabrics, improved fits, and somehow built a company that lasted fourteen years.
There were fabric hunts in New York City, late nights packing orders, Common Ground Fair weekends, and moments of absolute chaos and laughter. We’ve watched our gear travel everywhere: marathons, ski trails, mountaintops, grocery stores, and everyday life.
What stands out most after all this time isn’t really the products, though. It’s the people.
The customers who believed in us early. The ambassadors who shared our gear because they genuinely loved it. The friendships formed through this accidental little adventure.
Running a small manufacturing business in Maine has never been easy, but together, we made it work for fourteen years — and we’re incredibly grateful you were part of the journey.
As we wind things down, we’re offering free domestic shipping and 10% off sitewide for the next week as we work through remaining inventory.
The photo in this email — bundled up in a Hygge and blowing powdery snow into the air like a wish — feels a little like this whole moment to us: bittersweet, grateful, fleeting, and beautiful.
