OFFICIAL STATEMENT
As the event organizers, the Gumaca Pickleball Club (GPC) would like to formally address the incident that occurred during the tournament held on May 17, 2026, involving a participant/team from the Macalelon Pickleball Club.
Following complaints raised by players and observations made by tournament officials during the Mixed Doubles Low Intermediate category, the officers of GPC conducted a careful review and assessment of the situation. While we understand the concerns regarding player classification and respect the opinions of all participants, the matter was not solely about skill level or previous category participation.
As part of the registration process, players were required to declare their current DUPR rating. In this case, the player involved indicated “N/A”.
Concerns were raised not only because of the player’s strong gameplay, but also due to repeated actions and conduct during the matches. Tournament organizers and officials issued reminders and warnings to ensure proper conduct and to prevent possible risk of injury to opponents, nearby players, and spectators. Despite these interventions, the same actions continued until the conclusion of the match.
After careful deliberation and review, the organizing committee determined that there had been violations of the tournament rules and guidelines previously agreed upon by all participants.
The organizing committee intended to discuss the matter calmly and respectfully with the player and team after the match; however, they had already left the venue before the conversation could take place, preventing the issue from being resolved on-site.
The Gumaca Pickleball Club has also reached out to the coach of the Macalelon Pickleball Club to formally discuss the situation following social media posts made regarding the interventions of tournament officials.
This decision was not made lightly and was reached only after careful review and discussion by the committee to ensure fairness, safety, and impartiality. We respectfully ask everyone to remain professional and avoid spreading negativity or misinformation regarding the matter.
GPC remains committed to promoting fairness, respect, safety, and a positive environment for the growing pickleball community. We appreciate everyone’s understanding, cooperation, and continued support for the sport.
Thank you —
