IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

Unilab’s ActiveHealth Run United Freedom Run in CDO rescheduled
3,500 runners expected to participate in the run race rescheduled on July 10.

ActiveHealth, a division of United Laboratories Inc. (Unilab), is in the middle of preparations with Cagayan de Oro-based Circle Productions for the upcoming Run United Freedom Run which will be held at Limketkai Center in Cagayan de Oro City, and has been rescheduled on July 10, 2016 in observance of Ramadan.

“Previously slated on June 12, hence the event name, we felt it right to reschedule the run out of respect to our Muslim brothers and sisters. We can see that the running community in the province has grown and is very much active, and we want as much Kagayanons regardless of religion to be able to join this event,” said Lester P. Castillo, Sports and PR Executive of ActiveHealth.

Registration, which started last March 27, is still ongoing, and interested runners are encouraged to register early as demand for limited slots increases as the race day nears. Four distance categories are set to challenge and bring out the best from the expected 3,500 participants: 3km, 5km, 10km, and 21km half marathon.

Registration centers include: La Cabana Spa, Ale Restaurant, SprintMultisport Store and Limketkai Mall. All participants will receive a premium ActiveHealth branded Race Singlet, ActiveHealth Drifit Race Visor, and Finishers Kit with items from participating sponsors. Samples of the innovative singlets and finishers shirts are available at the registration centers. Half Marathon participants will also receive an ActiveHealth race belt, finisher’s token and a timing chip. Registration fees range from Php 350 to Php 1,000 depending on the distance category. For groups registering with a minimum of three persons, discounts will be given.

“The last race we had in Cagayan de Oro was the Run United CDO on November 27, 2011. That was nearly five years ago. Now, we hope to give CDO runners a race to remember once again,” said Lester P. Castillo of ActiveHealth.

ActiveHealth will provide participants of Run United Freedom Run with pacers or leaders with whom they can run with during a race in order to reach a target time and distance. This is a first in a race event in CDO. ActiveHealth has a team of volunteer pacers consists of celebrity athletes and prominent bloggers. Runners can join them at the gun start, they will be identified with the colorful balloons they carry as markers and bibs on their back that indicates their name, distance, and target time.

With the combined expertise of its partner Circle Productions, ActiveHealth is confident that Run United Freedom Run will offer a new level of race experience. “As in every race we organize, participants can rest assured that it will be high on quality, is safe and fun,” added Francis Velasquez.

Circle Productions, led by its President Jeffrey Ang and race director Francis Velasquez, is behind the biggest races held in Cagayan de Oro including the Cagayan De Oro Freedom Run, which they started in June 2010.

ActiveHealth is the wellness platform and advocacy of United Laboratories Inc. or Unilab. It provides a comprehensive offering to the active community—from sports nutrition and fitness gear to training programs and events. Through its mantra “exceed yourself”, it challenges active individuals to level up in every race.

ActiveHealth is now on its sixth year of providing quality races. It is the name behind events such as Run United, Tri United, Aquathlon United, Duathlon United, and Cycling United. The Run United series caters to 12,000 runners per race three times a year. ActiveHealth has active partnerships with leading athletes, race experts and coaches—many of whom are brand ambassadors. They include running coach Rio dela Cruz (for Run United series); triathlon coaches Dan and Ani De Leon-Brown (with the Next Step Triathlon Camp Series), triathlete Raul Cuevas (for Bike United and Tri United series); and ‘The Bull Runner’ Jaymie Pizarro (with The Dream Marathon).

“We are glad to have found another partner in Circle Productions, which is as committed as we are in developing the active lifestyle among Filipinos. We hope to bring the ActiveHealth touch in Circle’s Freedom Run. We are sure the runners will have a great run with us,” said Castillo.

Besides race organizing, ActiveHealth also offers a complete lineup of sports nutrition products to take care of the needs of the athletes before, during and after their races: Enervon Activ daily multivitamins for stamina and immunity; Active Health Carbgel for fast burning and long lasting energy during race and training; and Enervon HP drink for optimal muscle recovery to prevent the feeling of “laspag” after the race.

Interesting facts about running

Did you know….

1. Running makes you happier.

A 2012 study proved that just 30 minutes of running during the week for three weeks boosted sleep quality, mood, and concentration during the day. Ever heard someone call running their “drug”? Well, apparently, it actually is pretty similar. A 2007 study in Physiological Behavior showed that running causes the same kind of neurochemical adaptations in brain reward pathways that also are shared by addictive drugs.

2. Running helps you get skinnier.
You know that exercises burns calories while you’re working out. The bonus is that when you exercise, the burn continues after you stop. Studies have shown that regular exercise boosts “afterburn”—that is, the number of calories you burn after exercise. That’s kind of like getting a paycheck even after you retire. And you don’t have to be sprinting at the speed of sound to get this benefit. This happens when you’re exercising at an intensity a little faster than your easy pace, and a little slower than marathon pace.

3.Running strengthens your knees (and your other joints and bones, too).
It’s long been known that running increases bone mass, and even helps stem age-related bone loss. But chances are, you’ve had family, friends, and strangers warn you that “running is bad for your knees.” Well, science has proven that it’s not. In fact, studies show that running improves health.

4. Running will keep you sharper, even as you age.
Worried about “losing it” as you get older? Working out regularly will help you stay “with it.” A December 2012 study published in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review concluded that the evidence is insurmountable that regular exercise helps defeat age-related mental decline, particularly functions like task switching, selective attention, and working memory. Studies consistently found that fitter older adults scored better in mental tests than their unfit peers. What’s more, in stroke patients, regular exercise improves memory, language, thinking, and judgment problems by almost 50%.

5. Running reduces your risk of cancer.
Maybe running doesn’t cure, but there’s plenty of proof that it helps prevent it. A vast review of 170 epidemiological studies in the Journal of Nutrition showed that regular exercise is associated with a lower risk of certain cancers. What’s more, if you already have cancer, running can improve your quality of life while you’re undergoing chemotherapy.

6. Running adds years to your life.
Even if you meet just the minimum of amount of physical activity—(30 minutes, 5 times per week), you’ll live longer. Studies show that when different types of people started exercising, they lived longer. Smokers added 4.1 years to their lives; nonsmokers gained 3 years. Even if you’re still smoking, you’ll get 2.6 more years. Cancer survivors extended their lives by 5.3 years.
