📘 DepEd Guidelines on Grading Student‑Athletes
The Department of Education (DepEd) ensures that student‑athletes are not academically penalized for participating in official athletic meets.
While there is no single “Athletes’ Grading Law,” these guidelines are based on RA 10676 (Student‑Athletes Protection Act), DepEd Order No. 8, s. 2015, and applicable regional/division memoranda.
✅ Key Policies Explained
🔹 1. “No Lower Grade” Policy
If a student‑athlete’s computed grade is lower than the previous quarter, the previous grade is retained.
If the computed grade is higher, the higher grade is recorded.
Applies to student‑athletes in good academic standing (not failing more than two core subjects).
🔹 2. Academic Support & Due Consideration
Make‑up classes, special tests, or remediation must be provided.
SLMs or alternative tasks may be given during training or competition.
No grade deductions for absences due to official athletic participation.
🔹 3. Eligibility Rules
Failing more than two (2) core subjects may disqualify an athlete from higher‑level meets.
Schools cannot withhold grades or clearances as punishment.
🔹 4. Awards & Recognition
Under DepEd Order No. 36, s. 2016, student‑athletes may receive Special Recognition even if not academically “With Honors.”
Sports participation is recognized as a valid co‑curricular activity.
📌 Implementation details may vary by Division or Region. Always refer to your local Division Memorandum.
