What is Picklewood?

A wooden pickleball paddle handcrafted in Cebu by the same workshop behind Wagas Crafts and Wagas Ukuleles.

It started from a simple idea: to honor the early days of pickleball, when paddles were made of wood, and bring it into today’s game with the kind of craft we know best.

From our workshop to the court.

This is not your usual paddle.

Which court are you headed to this week?

Maybe it’s time to bring a wooden paddle with you.

Here’s our Natural Picklewood paddle in action. Handmade from mahogany wood and features our engraved honeycomb texture that adds grip and spin to every hit.

Inspired by the early roots of pickleball, but still made to be played today.

So which one are you going for?

Aside from our Natural paddles, Wagas Picklewood also comes in other colorways, each one painted on wood by a local artisan and finished by hand in our workshop.

Yes, it can actually be played!

Here’s James, a tennis turned pickleball player we met at The Courts of Cebu, putting the Natural Picklewood to work.

He joined our little shoot, picked up the wooden paddle, and started hitting really good shots with it. Seeing someone with his skill level use it in real rallies made this project feel even more real for us.

Because before carbon fiber and modern paddles, pickleball started with wood.

Our paddle is made from mahogany wood, engraved with our honeycomb texture for added grip and spin, and handcrafted in our workshop in Compostela, Cebu.

A closer look at Wagas Picklewood!

Here’s our PH Flag and Natural Picklewood paddles, both made from mahogany wood and finished by hand in our workshop in Compostela, Cebu.

The PH Flag design is handpainted, while the Natural paddle keeps the warm look of the wood itself.

Both feature our honeycomb texture, made to add grip and spin to every hit while keeping the feel of a wooden paddle.

So grateful to Miss Kat for inviting Wagas Picklewood to be part of the first ever One Cebu Pickleball Community event ✨

It was such a special day seeing club admins from different pickleball clubs in Cebu come together, play, connect, and celebrate the growing community here.

We’re also very thankful to everyone who took the time to check out and test our wooden paddles on court. It means a lot to us as a small workshop slowly bringing our craft into this sport.

Thank you for giving Wagas Picklewood a place in this community. This is just the beginning!

This is not your usual paddle.

Back in 2010, Ritchie was asked by a client from France to make a wooden paddle, back when the sport was also starting to grow in Europe. Years later, with pickleball growing here in Cebu, he had the thought again:

Why not try making a modern wooden paddle now?

So we experimented.

We tested the feel of wood and what could work better on court. After months of adjusting, Wagas Picklewood slowly became what it is today.

Each one features the honeycomb texture on the paddle face to add grip and spin to every hit, while the rest of the paddle is fully shaped by Filipino artisans.

It carries the same woodworking experience we have built through the years, from baskets to ukuleles, and now to these paddles.

We want to give a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped us get here. To Jana, Michael, Rnell, and the real pickleball players who tested our early paddles.

Wagas Picklewood paddles are now available through our website!
