Less running, more lifting. My prescription is changing. Here is why muscle is your best medicine.
I spent years telling patients to just run, but I was wrong.
Do not get me wrong, I still love cardio. But if I could write a single prescription to help you live a longer, healthier, and more vibrant life, it would look like this: 25 percent cardio and 75 percent muscle building.
Yes, your doctor is telling you to pick up some weights.
As we get older, we do not just lose time. We lose muscle mass. And as your doctor, I do not just want to add years to your life. I want to add life to your years. I want you to be strong enough to carry your groceries, play with your grandkids, and stand tall for decades to come.
Here is why building muscle is the ultimate life hack:
It lowers your blood sugar.
Think of your muscles as a giant sponge. When you build muscle, you create more storage space to pull sugar directly out of your bloodstream. It absorbs glucose even without needing insulin, making it a powerful weapon against diabetes.
It lowers your blood pressure.
Strength training makes your blood vessels more elastic and resilient. When your muscles are strong, your heart does not have to work twice as hard to pump blood through your body.
It extends your lifespan.
Muscle mass is one of the single best predictors of how long you will live. It protects your joints, prevents dangerous falls as you age, and keeps your metabolic health firing.
So, let us make a deal. Keep walking and running, but do not skip the weights. Your future self is counting on the muscle you build today.
Are you lifting weights this week? Let me know in the comments.
