HOW MPL BILIRAN STARTED?
It all began with a shared passion for Mobile Legends and a dream to see Biliran on the esports map. In 2019, a group of dedicated individuals, led by Mr. Tito Amerigo V. Custodio Jr. and Mr. Fernando E. Quiroz Jr., formed the Biliran E-gamers club. Their vision was to create a platform for Biliran's talented gamers to showcase their skills and compete at a higher level. The club, with the support of the Computer Science Society (BiPSU), organized the first-ever face-to-face Mobile Legends tournament in Biliran, held on March 13, 2019, at the Biliran Province Capitol Ground. 31 teams, their eyes glued to their phones, competed for the coveted title. The committee, comprised of Mr. John Daniel Lahoylahoy and Ms. Riza Delantar, worked tirelessly to ensure the tournament's success. The event was a resounding success, with EVIL GODS from Almeria, Biliran, emerging as champions. The victory ignited a sense of pride and camaraderie among the Biliran gamers, proving that they could compete with the best.
Mr. Leonard I. Olaer, who initially had no knowledge of Mobile Legends or esports, found himself drawn to the energy and excitement of the tournament. Witnessing the passion of the gamers and the dedication of the organizers, he was quickly captivated by the potential of esports. He became a staunch supporter, extending his gratitude to Mr. Custodio Jr., Mr. Quiroz Jr., Mr. Lahoylahoy, and Ms. Delantar for introducing him to this vibrant world. His unwavering belief in the Biliran E-gamers club and their vision fueled their efforts, paving the way for the tournament's realization. The event was also sponsored by the former governor, now congressman, Gerardo Espina Jr., whose commitment to supporting the youth and promoting esports in Biliran was instrumental in making the tournament a reality.
The pandemic, however, threatened to extinguish the flame. But Mr. Leonard I. Olaer, a staunch supporter of esports, refused to let the momentum die. He organized the first ever provincial ML Online Home Quarantine Tournament, a beacon of hope during a time of isolation. The tournament, aptly named "Walang Mababagot," brought together gamers from across the province, fostering a sense of community and keeping spirits high. X-odds emerged victorious, their triumph a testament to the resilience of Biliran's esports community.
The holiday season brought a new opportunity for Mr. Olaer to further champion esports. During his term as the former FSC President and Student Regent of BiPSU, he organized the ML Online Christmas League, attracting 73 teams and showcasing the growing popularity of the game. NO SYMPHATY emerged as champions, their victory a testament to the dedication and skill of Biliran gamers. The tournament, a symbol of festive spirit and competitive gaming, further solidified Mr. Olaer's commitment to fostering a vibrant esports community in Biliran.
In 2021, with the pandemic easing, Mr. Olaer took a bold step. He founded the Biliran E-sports Community, a platform for gamers to connect, collaborate, and grow. The community's first major event was the MPL Biliran Season 2, a province-wide tournament that brought together over 100 teams, each vying for the coveted title. The tournament was a testament to the dedication and passion of the community, with NEWC emerging as champions.
The MPL Biliran Season 2 marked a turning point. It was the beginning of a new era, where esports in Biliran was no longer just a hobby, but a burgeoning scene with a bright future. The tournament, with its province-wide reach and strong support from sponsors like SMART Communications Inc., Cong. Gerardo Espina Jr., Gov. Rogelio Espina, and the mayors of different municipalities, solidified Biliran's place on the esports map. A heartfelt thank you to these sponsors and stakeholders who have continuously shared their blessings, making the tournament a reality.
The success of MPL Biliran Season 2 paved the way for future tournaments, each bigger and more exciting than the last. The MPL Biliran Season 3, sponsored by Gerard Roger Espina, the son of former Gov. and Cong. Rogelio Espina, saw ISLABiliran Phoenix (BLRN) rise to victory.
The recent conclusion of MPL Biliran Season 4: Naval MLBB Cup 2024, a testament to the community's unwavering passion, saw Luminous Strata from Tacloban emerge as champions. The tournament, held as part of the Naval Town Fiesta 2024 Sports Activities, was a resounding success, attracting 51 teams from across the region and co-sponsored by SMART Communications Inc. and other stakeholders. A heartfelt thank you to all sponsors and stakeholders who have continuously shared their blessings, making the tournament a success.
Biliran Esports is now setting its sights on MPL Biliran Season 5, a Visayas-wide tournament that promises to be even bigger and better. The community is determined to make Biliran known for its high-quality tournaments, where no expense is spared to provide a rewarding experience for all participants. The goal is to create a platform where players can showcase their skills, compete at the highest level, and receive the recognition they deserve.
The journey of MPL Biliran is a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and community. It is a story of how a group of individuals, united by their love for esports, transformed a small province into a hub for competitive gaming. The future of Biliran esports is bright, and the community is ready to embrace it.
