BFPNG is the governing body for the sport in the country and is built on a strong basketball tradition. BFPNG affiliated to FIBA in 1963 and is currently listed 113th overall on the NIKE FIBA combined world ranking. BFPNG is one of twenty-two affiliated national federations that participate in the sport throughout the FIBA in Oceania region. BFPNG strives to serve its affiliated associations, members, sponsors and the people of PNG in the most positive and beneficial manner.

Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea Elects New Board Members at 2026 AGM

The Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (BFPNG) successfully held its 2026 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday at TAIC, where members elected new board officials and reaffirmed the federation's commitment to strengthening basketball across the country.
Key outcomes included the re-election of Simon Dixie as Vice President, the election of Kathy Araea as General Secretary, succeeding Gosa Jack, and Naomie Lopes as an Ordinary Board Member.
BFPNG President David Peter highlighted the federation's progress in rebuilding stakeholder confidence through improved governance and international success, including Papua New Guinea's historic qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games for 3x3 Basketball.
"The federation has made significant progress in rebuilding trust with our stakeholders while continuing to deliver results on and off the court," Peter said.
Looking ahead, Peter reaffirmed BFPNG's vision to strengthen competitions, coaching, officiating, affiliated associations and player development, with the goal of becoming Oceania's leading national sporting federation on and off the court's.
The President also acknowledged the dedicated service of outgoing General Secretary Gosa Jack, thanking him for his leadership and contribution to the development of basketball in Papua New Guinea.
The AGM marks another important milestone as BFPNG continues to strengthen governance and expand opportunities for basketball communities throughout the country.

BFPNG WOMEN'S 3x3 TEAM ENTERS FINAL PHASE OF PREPARATIONS FOR GLASGOW 2026

With less than a month remaining before the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (BFPNG) will host a final national training camp this weekend as preparations intensify for the country's Women's 3x3 National Team.
In line with the BFPNG and Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) selection policies and requirements, invited athletes will take part in an intensive two-day camp aimed at finalising the squad that will proudly represent Papua New Guinea on the international stage.
The camp will commence on Saturday and conclude on Sunday evening, providing players and coaching staff with an opportunity to fine-tune team systems, evaluate performances, and ensure all athletes meet the standards required for selection.
Head Coach Gavin Dela Cruz will be in the country to facilitate the training sessions and oversee the final stages of preparations. His presence will provide valuable guidance and technical expertise as the athletes continue their push towards Glasgow 2026.
The camp is designed to lock in team systems, sharpen cohesion, and ensure that whoever earns a place in the final four is not just selected — but prepared to compete.
BFPNG remains committed to ensuring that all selections are conducted fairly and transparently, with decisions guided by the Federation's policies and the requirements set out by PNGOC.
The Commonwealth Games will provide another opportunity for Papua New Guinea's women to showcase their talent against some of the world's best Commonwealth nations, while continuing to inspire the next generation of young female 3x3 basketball players throughout the country.

Condolence Tribute to the Late Ronnie John Mea

It is with deep sadness that the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea, together with the wider basketball community across the Country and Oceania, mourns the passing of Mr. Ronnie J. Mea, who departed this life on the 9th of March 2026.

Mr Mea was more than a supporter of the game — he was a pillar of basketball in Papua New Guinea. His dedication, passion and unwavering commitment to the growth and development of basketball helped shape the sport and inspire many technical officials, players, coaches, and administrators throughout the years. His contribution to basketball in our country is truly unmatched as one of the longest Development Officers of PNG Basketball, and his impact will continue to be felt for generations to come.
Ronnie believed deeply in the power of sport to unite communities and uplift young people. Through his involvement and leadership, he helped strengthen the basketball family and played an important role in nurturing the game both on and off the court. His presence around the courts was always felt, and his charismatic smile on the courtside will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him in PNG and the Oceania region.
On behalf of the President of Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea and the Executives, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Ronnie’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. We share in your grief and honor his life with deep gratitude and respect.
Ronnie J. Mea’s legacy will continue to live on in the many lives he touched and in the continued growth of basketball throughout Papua New Guinea and the Pacific.

Carrying PNG’s Colors with Pride

From Morobe Province to the international stage, Margaret Mebel’s journey to the FIBA U17 Oceania Championships in Samoa was nothing short of extraordinary.

Traveling alone for the first time, Margaret stepped into a new world of basketball - officiating alongside seasoned referees, learning from their professionalism, and embracing the cultural richness of Samoa.

Her courage, faith, and determination not only elevated her skills but also ignited her vision: to train and inspire more officials back home in PNG.

“I am so grateful - I will never forget this experience,” Margaret reflects.

Her story is a powerful reminder that sport connects cultures, builds confidence, and carries the pride of a nation.

Condolence Tribute to the Late Larry Miro

It is with deep sadness that the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea mourns the passing of Mr. Larry Miro, Commissioner of the PNG Men’s Basketball League, who left us on the morning of 6 January 2026.

Larry was more than a leader in our sport - he was a true servant of basketball, a visionary who dedicated his life to growing the game and inspiring generations of players, coaches, and fans. His passion for basketball was unmatched, and his commitment to building the PNG Men’s Basketball League into a platform of excellence will remain part of his enduring legacy.

Through his leadership, Larry championed unity, discipline, and pride in our sport. He believed in basketball’s power to bring communities together and to uplift young people across Papua New Guinea. His tireless work and unwavering spirit have left an permanent mark on our Federation and on the wider sporting family.
