Waka Ama in Te Whitianga A Kupe: connecting people with each other, with the wai & kaupapa Mฤori Whitianga Waka Ama Inc

Welcome to our page! Our Origins
We began in May 2015 with the help of Hauraki Waka Ama Inc Club. The initiative for Whitianga Waka Ama came from Whitianga Social Services with a keen interest to have the community eventually drive Waka Ama. We became an independent incorporated

society in 2019. We were fortunate to have been provided with a waka and equipment for our use by Hauraki Waka Ama Club while we raised the funds to purchase our own. We now have our own waka (Takere waka) as well as our own club paddles and life jackets thanks to some wonderful community support. The Club is open to all and we encourage children youth, adults and older adults. Our Objectives
To encourage community participation and spirit (togetherness)
To encourage youth leadership
To get to know and respect our local environment
To provide opportunity for competition
To have fun and be safe

What are the Benefits? Fitness, socialising, team spirit and having fun! Get in touch and come find out for yourself.

Quality control officer Nug Corkill making sure the jobs done right.

Kaihoe Stephen and myself both popped down to give the area a once over, mow the lawns, de moss the waka and clean them.

One on the mower, the other on the 2 waka and then finishing off with a wash and shine.

Stephen was quite proud and rightly so. When you take care of and put love into things that bring you joy it makes the connection stronger and your pride in what you do blossom.

Thanks Stephen for initiating this, was a great morning spent outdoors and Nug enjoyed the treats!

Recently the legend Tupuria King came to whitianga to give a workshop to our kaihoe.
Everyone appreciated the chance to upskill and learn where they can both as race kaihoe and social kaihoe.

We have so many kaihoe keen to progress for races, to go further out on the wai socially with less effort due to better technique and train up as steers to take social crews out giving more options for people to paddle.

To provide opportunities like this fosters relationships within the club, gives a greater understanding of each others needs and aspirations as well as cohesion as a crew.

Thank you Tupuria King for coming to Whitianga and sharing your wealth of knowledge with our kaihoe.
