One of my favourite pieces of feedback from clients is hearing them say:

"Dialling up and dialling down is such a kind way to think about myself."

So often we focus on what we need to fix, change, or do differently. A strengths-based approach invites a different perspective. Instead of labelling behaviours as "good" or "bad," we can recognise that our strengths may simply need to be dialled up or dialled down depending on our context and capacity.

Sometimes what feels exhausting and impossible — it might actually be a strength being overused and expressed in a way that isn't serving us in that moment.

Understanding ourselves through a strengths based lens creates space for greater self-awareness, self-compassion, and choice.

What if the next time you noticed yourself struggling, you asked:
"Do I need to dial this strength up, or dial it down?"

A small shift in language can make a big difference in how we see ourselves.

Skills and Strengths we are really good at and have relied on over a life time can be over played and we may not even realise.

Sometimes our body tells us and chances are it has likely being trying to tell us for a while. That heavy feeling after you leave a meeting; sore tense stomach; high heart rate as you anticipate the next challenge.

Listen closely, your body uses somatic markers to let you know there is dysregulation in your nervous system.

Maybe you are over playing that strength you are known for being really good at "the expert" but it is coming at a cost you.

Acknowledging this is not failure and using your profile becomes a game changer in your next steps for optimal authentic functioning while prioritising your wellbeing.

I shared at a yoga class one day, the trusty little hand soap bottle is a daily metaphor. We can visibly see when it is getting low. Instead of filling it up straight away - too busy - we give it another few days to squeeze the rest of the soap out.

More than few days later there is no soap left but we pump harder, maybe get mad with the bottle for being empty and why in this era can’t it just fill itself up? Who needs soap anyway?

Knowing we need it - we give in to pouring in more soap from the bulk bottle only for the soap to go everywhere. Agitated with the whole process we wonder why we didn’t just fill it up when we could see it was low?

The room laughed when I shared this, but everyone nodded too. We can often see the signs that our energy is low and strengths that have previously served us are leaving us feeling depleted or even burnt out.
