Another good day on the water, and although we tried for a game fish, we struck out this time...

Luckily we knocked over a couple of kings and some snapper first so didn't go home empty handed.

We also saw this massive splash behind the boat as something smashed some bait....

Unfortunately we played it off as a shark, but if we had have known it was probably a big old bluefin, we would have stuck some livebaits out.... Oh well, still pretty amazing what you see out there sometimes.

So the decision to drive home from Auckland straight after the football last night turned out to be a good one.

Launching the boat just after 5am, we were met with conditions pretty much as good as they get, but as is often the case, good conditions don't always translate into good fishing.

We trolled the lures for a solid 8 hours out wide in around the 400m mark with nothing to show for it other than a few sunfish and some dolphins.

The decision was made to start heading back in when we came across a few birds that looked like they were watching something in the water.

A minute or two later the Fathom Mistress in Lumo got absolutely crunched from the short rigger, and as we cleared the rest of the gear we watched in amazement at how quickly the line was peeling off the reel.

Luckily we are becoming a pretty well oiled machine, and by the time the last line was out of the water, Theo had his gimbal and harness on and was ready to do battle.

The fight itself was pretty uneventful compared to other fish, and it came in reasonably easily, except for our first attempt to gaff it when it decided to shoot off to the other side of the boat, almost taking Donalds fingers off, and also Theo off into the water with it....

We got pretty lucky not to lose it there, but made no mistakes the second chance we had, and by 2pm we had a respectful yellowfin tuna photographed, bled, gutted and on ice in the chilly bin ready for the trip home.

Another successful trip and it's still so early in the season, fingers crossed our luck continues ☺️

Went out today on our charter with Cliff from as part of the holiday prize package I was unbelievably lucky enough to win.

It was an early start, meeting at the wharf at 430am, where the boat was craned into the water and we shot out to the first offshore FAD.

It's a pretty quick bite for the yellowfin in the morning, but we saw them busting up and it didn't take long to get a triple hook up, myself and Brady cranked in a couple of smaller ones while Theo managed to pick out the bigger one that went 17kgs.

We saw a few birds working wider so headed out there where we came across a big humpback whale and her calf, and next to them we picked up a couple of fat skipjack tuna before we headed back to the FAD to have a jig.

A couple of drops and Brady Cole did well to hook a beauty on a Catch Long John Slider Jig, which had the Maxel Transformer singing, and a lovely bend in the Jigstar Phantom rod. His fish went 22kgs and is a pretty epic first yellowfin, both for the size and the fact he caught it jigging.

Lastly we had a troll in close for a Wahoo, something I wàs pretty keen to land.

We had a shot early on with the tell tail signs of a lure missing half its skirt, but Cliff changed that out for another lure, and it wasn't much longer before I was on to my first wahoo, which went 14kgs.

Not a bad charter, and Id definitely recommend anyone planning a trip to Niue to get in touch with Cliff and get yourself out on a charter :)

Nice to get out for a fish with in some moody conditions.... It was pretty much fog out there all day, mixed with a bit of drizzle and eventually some sunshine, although that came with a fair whack of humidity.

Regardless we got a few fish, including a slightly better one going 113cm and just over 18kgs.

This particular fish put up a decent scrap on my lighter Maxel/Jigstar combo, and I was probably lucky he hit the jig so close to the boat, giving me a bit more time to get it under control.

It also gave us a good test at the boat making a couple of last ditch efforts to bust me off on the motor, but we stayed calm and collected and Kaembal was finally able to bring it on board.

What a wicked day on the water with these two legends ☺️

Early start with the Surtees on the water just after 5am, with a plan to go see if we could hook one of those 200kg plus bluefin tuna out there at the moment.

In pretty amazing conditions the place was alive with more seabirds and bait schools than you can imagine....

However athough the signs were promising, and the fact we marked a couple of tuna on the Lowrance our baits only got eaten by sharks, including one feisty little bu**er that attacked and bit my motor.

Don to his delight did manage to catch a few trevally on softbaits, but needed a lesson on how to release fish back, preferably not after they have been ikied and bled... 😲

So after giving up on the tuna, the backup was to go and catch some kings, and get Sehwan onto his first legal one, while at the same time teaching him the art of mechanical jigging using the Maxe/Jigstar combos.

After watching myself and Don land a couple of nice fish, it was Sehwans turn to put into practice what he had learned, and sure enough he was rewarded with a beautiful specimen that also fell victim to the pink Catch Fishing Long John Slider jig.

The pure joy and also relief when that fish came on board was amazing and to me, what fishing is all about.

Can't wait to get out there an do it all again 😀

We weren't expecting as much rain as we had, but we battled on and secured a pretty good feed in the end on the old black label softbaits.

Cheers to Donald Purkiss for the company and filleting the fish when we got back :)

Not bad for a low tide, lunch time fish :)

People know I'm not a big fan of using bait, unless live baiting of course, but a mate told me about these fishbite things, basically an artificial bait that stays on the hook, plus doesn't go off so you can keep a pack in your tackle bag... Turns out they work ok :)

15/03/2025

It took 3 goes for this big tuna to actually hook up, but unfortunately the hook pulled 15 mins into the fight....

Still pretty exciting for us all, and luckily I was smart enough to go jig up a kingfish to take home before heading out wide, so we didn't go back empty handed :)

Decided to leave the boat at home and show this kid that fishing is not just jumping on a boat and reeling in a 52kg Tuna 😂

Early start as per normal with an hour drive north to this pretty spectacular spot!

It didn't take long from getting the berley in the water to Theo getting some nice kahawai to send out as a livebait, and within maybe 20 minutes we had our first enquiry as a kingfish came in, harassed the bait but didnt take it.

We didn't have to wait much longer though for another kingfish to come racing in and this time you could tell he was hungry as he chased the bait around in circles before swallowing it.

Next 5 minutes was reasonably stressful as Theo hooked a decent kahawai at the same time, which predictably had the lines crossed, but luckily they came right without any drama....

Watching the video which I'll have to add in the comments, it's always interesting to see how I act in the moment, and it turns out I'm pretty good at not yelling at a child for about 90% of the time 😂

Anyway, he got his kahawai on to the rock, and was then able to put his rod down and hand me the gaff so I could finally bring my fish in.

Another pretty cool experience for both of us, as not much beats watching a kingfish at your feet chasing a bait, along with seeing multiple big rays cruise past and even a big old bronzie at the end as we were packing up.

A few more of these landbased missions and he'll have earned the right to come back out on the boat ;)
