So the decision to drive home from Auckland straight after the football last night turned out to be a good one.
Launching the boat just after 5am, we were met with conditions pretty much as good as they get, but as is often the case, good conditions don't always translate into good fishing.
We trolled the lures for a solid 8 hours out wide in around the 400m mark with nothing to show for it other than a few sunfish and some dolphins.
The decision was made to start heading back in when we came across a few birds that looked like they were watching something in the water.
A minute or two later the Fathom Mistress in Lumo got absolutely crunched from the short rigger, and as we cleared the rest of the gear we watched in amazement at how quickly the line was peeling off the reel.
Luckily we are becoming a pretty well oiled machine, and by the time the last line was out of the water, Theo had his gimbal and harness on and was ready to do battle.
The fight itself was pretty uneventful compared to other fish, and it came in reasonably easily, except for our first attempt to gaff it when it decided to shoot off to the other side of the boat, almost taking Donalds fingers off, and also Theo off into the water with it....
We got pretty lucky not to lose it there, but made no mistakes the second chance we had, and by 2pm we had a respectful yellowfin tuna photographed, bled, gutted and on ice in the chilly bin ready for the trip home.
Another successful trip and it's still so early in the season, fingers crossed our luck continues ☺️
