3 years and more with the black belt. I am grateful to be awarded the 1st degree today by my original coach, friend, and long time training partner Jose Gomes.
Privileged to receive this honour at the same time as my brother Renan Secco.

10 years of Jiu-Jitsu. I can recall when I started.

Thanks also to Eugene Bareman, Doug Viney and Adam Johnson for accepting me into and allowing me to continue my development as a martial artist.

Olavo Abreu as well for his role in my development years from Brown to Black.

Last session done before a massive weekend in Melbourne for and New Zealand and Australian MMA.
48 on Friday; 24 on Saturday; followed by the big one, 243 on Sunday with the middleweight title going.
9 extremly talented hardworking CKB fighters in action over these 3 events.

Excited that I will be in Melbourne for Ben Royle upcoming fight.

A really interesting fight between a very talented upcomer and a veteran of the sport.

What a weekend. Eternal MMA 48 followed by UFC 243 the next day.

I believe that CKB has 7 fighters fighting in Melbourne over these 2 days. Busy times.

Vastly experienced BJJ Black Belt and owner of 25 wins in MMA, Rodolfo Marques, gets the chance to fight in front of his home city fans for the first time in over two and a half years. The charismatic Brasilian comes into this fight with a fire in his belly, looking for a good win to get himself in the mix with the fiercely competitive Eternal MMA Featherweight division.

Ben Royle has different plans, the Phuket Top Team standout is planning on ruining Rodolfo's home town party and propel himself back toward featherweight title contention.
With an aggressive Thai style and solid wrestling / BJJ, this fight makes for an absolute cracker, and another potential fight of the night.

These photos encapture a pervasive mental struggle. One that is present in all hard training sessions; an internal battle between two opposite personas within the mind competing for control of the body.
During any strenuous activity the body reaches a point where it starts to complain that it is tired, that is is fatigued.
One internal voice kicks in, it loudly and continually complains, whines and tells us to stop; it says that we need rest, that it is enough, even that it is too much.
At the same time another voice makes itself heard. It tells us to push on, that the fatigue we feel is a lie, that we know it is a survival mechanism of the body to conserve energy and that there is plenty left. It tells is that this is exactly where we need to be, what we need to be doing.
We must always listen to the second voice, this is the voice of productivity, of strength, and ultimately of success.
Unfortunately it is often the quieter of the two, therefore we must listen more carefully and pay heed to what it says. Ignore the loud, abrasive voice telling us to stop, telling us to quit. Instead listen to the quiet voice, the one that tells us to push hard, to drive through and reap the rewards of success.

Training and competing in different countries around the world has been a blessing, and helped to open my mind to an array of different approaches to grappling.
I have meet and trained with all sorts of people from all manner of backgrounds. From Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champions, top Wrestlers, Judo Olympians, to Sambo champions, as well as old school Catch Wrestlers.

All have vastly different approaches to the art of grappling. However all are effective and none are more effective than any of the others.
There are strengths and weaknesses within any martial art; and each of these styles has adapted and evolved around these, creating it's own unique approach to grappling.
It has been interesting for me to see not only the differences between the different grappling martial arts, but more so the similarities.
If one is truly serious about become a well rounded grappler, then it is imperative to cross train in other styles.

I like these pictures for what they captured in the moment.

As you can see (in the 3rd photo) I am paying close attention to teach some of the finer details of leg attacks.
Yet as you can see from his expression, I have not only missed the finer details, but also failed to grasp the fundamental basic concepts of the technique.

The thing with any martial art, is that no matter how much you know, and how good you get, you can never master, learn, or even know everything. Not even close.
This is particularly true of Jiu-Jitsu. There is just too much, and the martial art is constantly evolving.
I like the saying "the more you know, the more you realise how much you don't know", this is very true in Jiu-Jitsu.
There is no end, no destination, it is a journey. A journey that has no end; but the lack of an ending is the entire point, it is what makes it so great, so engaging, and so worthwhile.
