Game Day Report for today’s game, enjoy 😊
Firstly, we would like to give a huge thank you to both Waihou and Cobras clubs for allowing our boys the opportunity to be the curtain raiser for today’s big games. This is such a unique and special experience for the team, and one the boys will remember for a long time. These local clashes are such a massive part of our community culture, bringing towns together through sport, rivalry, and pride — and how proud are we to be part of it all.
As I hunkered down in my director’s chair today, trying to dodge the ominous weather rolling in and hiding our beautiful mountain, our boys were preparing to take on Paeroa in what turned out to be an absolute battle.
As the whistle blew, Te Aroha kicked off with intensity and purpose. Right from the start, our boys stood strong, delivering solid defence and keeping Paeroa locked in their own half for a solid time, every tackle sticking.
Paeroa kept knocking at the door though, testing our defence time and time again, and eventually they managed to slide over the try line to score first, taking the lead 5-0.
But our boys were far from rattled.
Te Aroha reset quickly and went straight back to work, building phases nicely and showing some slick skills through the backs. With quick hands and great support play, they opened up space out wide and scored brilliantly in the corner to level the game 5-5.
From there, both teams continued to battle it out in a tough physical contest. Possession changed hands multiple times with big tackles, strong carries, and some determined defensive sets from both sides. Then came a crucial moment — Te Aroha awarded a penalty right in front, and calmly slotting it through the uprights, the boys edged ahead 8-5 heading into halftime.
After halftime chats, a quick reset with ice and hydration needs met, the boys were straight back into the grind.
A few scorly showers rolled through, making conditions slippery and unpredictable, but both teams handled the wet weather brilliantly. Tactical kicking games came into play, with long clearing kicks, tricky bounces, and plenty of pressure applied across the park.
Te Aroha struck first in the second half. After soaking up some serious pressure with strong defence, the boys turned defence into attack with some magic hands and beautiful support play, crossing the line again to extend the lead to 13-5.
The game continued to turn into a real arm wrestle, with both sides throwing everything at each other. Then came one of the highlights of the day — Those handsome forwards packed down and produced a clean ruck move, opening the blindside perfectly. From there, it was an absolute runaway try down the sideline, diving into the corner to push the lead out to 20-5.
But Paeroa wasn’t done yet.
They fought their way back into the contest, putting our defence under pressure and eventually crashing over the line to make it 20-10.
Meanwhile, our reserves were pacing the sideline all game, cheering loudly, bringing the energy, and keeping themselves fuelled with a few well-timed lollies to stay game ready.
And then came the finish.
These comeback kids showed exactly what they’re made of today. The forwards worked tirelessly, keeping structure, winning collisions, and setting strong phases that allowed those flashy backs to unleash out wide. Great lines were run, support play was outstanding, and the teamwork across the park was something special to watch.
Two more brilliant tries were scored and converted, sealing an impressive 34-10 victory for Te Aroha.
A huge effort from every single player today. The determination, grit, teamwork, and heart shown out there in tough conditions was outstanding. Win or lose, this group continues to grow every week, and today they showed just how much potential they have.
So proud of the boys, the coaches, supporters, and everyone involved. What a day for our team and our community.
