Tangaroa ara rau

Tangaroa ara rau We are a collective of Māori water practitioners passionate about kaupapa wai.

Tangaroa ara rau refers to the many paths of Tangaroa - and for us, the many voices of the ocean. We are a collective of researchers, practitioners, creatives and passionate Māori who love the ocean, rivers, lakes and waterways in Aotearoa. We have a simple, ki uta ki tai (from the mountains to the sea) philosophy when thinking about Māori water safety. Whether it be waka ama, waka hourua, surfing

, SUPPing, standup paddle boarding, canoes, swimming or more we are passionate about engaging and connecting our people with our waters.

Some of the crew from Tangaroa Ara Rau attended the Waves Rec Aotearoa conference at the end of August. Our Kauora lead teamed up with Ōtaki Pools and Kāpiti Coast District Council to deliver a keynote on the importance of partnership in aquatics through the lense of the Kauora programme. Rob Hewitt also delivered a keynote talking about the Nation wide Manu comp and normalising Māori activity in and around the wai.

Here’s an awesome write up from our Healthy Families East Cape whānau who did a meke as kōrero on their Taurikura kaupapa!

Wohooo kua ea! Shout out to our newest Dr Hanara who graduated with his PhD at the University of Otago this weekend alongside his whānau, friends and Te Koronga whānau.

His kaupapa is about the benefits of Ruku Kai for reclaiming mātauranga Māori and hauora. He completed this with the support of Rob Hewitt, Professor Anne-Marie Jackson and our ruku communities across Aotearoa. You can read his PhD here: https://ourarchive.otago.ac.nz/esploro/outputs/9926542780301891

This PhD will also sit on our website in the rangahau tab alongside some of the other awesome kaupapa wai research that tauira have completed over the years.

Tēnā koutou e te iwi! I tēnei rā heading into the start of our Tangaroa moons we share this month’s blog post. In partnership with wakaama this month we share kōrero presented by Lara Collins (CEO) on behalf of Waka Ama New Zealand at the recent Safer Boating NZ forum hui. The core focus being - building a culture of safety

“We want our Waka Ama whānau to be safe on and off the water, we want them to be safe when they paddle but also to apply the same tikanga any time they are in, on or around Tangaroa. Whether that be swimming, boating, gathering kai or just hanging out around their waterways“

Kia ora rā e te iwi! This month’s blog post is now live, i tēnei marama Ngahuia writes about the recent Te Hau Kōmaru national waka hourua festival that took place in Kaiteretere. Inā te mīharo

“The breaking of dawn on the 6th of April 2024 signalled the beginning of Te Hau Kōmaru with the arrival of 4 waka moana in Kaiteretere. The fleet were led in by the kuia waka Ngahiraka Mai Tawhiti, followed by the pōtiki (youngest) of the fleet Tairāwhiti Waka, Te Matau a Māui and Hinemoana. It was a beautiful scene to behold with more than 10 kaikaranga lining the shore and a rōpū of kaiwero, enveloped in the symphony of pūmoana and pūtātara“

Tēnā tātou e te iwi, this months blog post is about the session our Kauora team ran with Te Wānanga o Raukawa Pulse netball team at Ōtaki awa and is now live on our page tukutuku.

“So, for a group of wāhine who spend a lot of their days on the court and training on land, this was a great opportunity to get them out of their usual environment and into the realm of ngā atua Māori, a space where we are ultimately not in charge”

Follow the link below to our pae tukutuku and if you have any pātai or enquiries about these types of sessions, send us a DM.
