What a weekend at Kartsport Manawatu for the Minigp Academy NZ NZSBK Kings & Queens and Kids event — good family fun from start to finish.

Format was teams of three — an NZSBK (or senior) rider paired with a 160cc junior and a 110cc junior, training then racing as a relay team. It finished with an endurance race with an actual rubber duck as the baton — 110 junior runs a pit lap to hand the duck to the 160 rider, who delivers it to the senior for their leg, then it comes back down through the juniors again. Yes, running. It was as chaotic as it sounds, in the best way.

There was a lot of bike sharing going on too — we had three other riders on our three bikes across the weekend. It made for a hectic weekend but it gave the NZSBK riders a real look at the effort going into feeding the sport we all love.

Highlights for us: Paul had his first ever race on a MiniGP bike (he's normally on a 1000cc), and loved every minute of it — still challenging but super fun even coming from a bigger bike. Kane finished 2nd overall in the 160cc category, still working on his lines after a small moment in practice, but riding with good consistency all weekend. Phoenix kept improving all the way through and had a great time doing it — big thanks to Chet for leading Phoenix's team, he was brilliant support all weekend.

They also ran a ladies' ride at the end of practice day — 15 women of all ages had a go. I jumped on, first time on a road-style bike in about two decades. Loved it. Leathers are getting added to the shopping list so I can do it again.

Kane’s latest racing has been rounds 1 & 2 of the Victoria Motorcycle Club Inc race series. Round 1 started great but Kane’s bike had issues that couldn’t be resolved on the day, thanks to everyone who helped try and sort it & thanks to the Hackling family he managed to ride the rest of the races on their Kayo, but with the Kayo not well suited to the big track he couldn’t keep up with the other competitors, he kept going though!

Round 2 went well for Kane back on his own bike, he managed to win all his races, with some great riding from his fellow competitors it wasn’t easy. Well done to Marc Chappell Racing & Maddox Parker of Cozy Motorsport there were a number of neck and neck nail biting moments, with a little off-roading to 😂. They took their revenge with the grape juice on the podium 🤣🍾, I’ll follow up with that video to. Well done to the rest of the riders on the R15’s of the Junior development grid to, it’s great to watch. In the last race Kane managed to pull something else out of the bag & kept up with the R15’s for a bit, achieving an amazing 1.34min lap time (pic included).

We can’t wait for Round 3 at Manfield 24th May 2026.

Round 5 of the PirelliMoto Mini GP Series was a great weekend yet again, despite the wet weather, it was the final round of the race series. Phoenix did great, continuing to build confidence riding in the challenging conditions, he managed to win himself one of the super cool Scorpion helmets for his improvement, he was pretty stoked, and we're super proud of his dedication to getting back on the bike every time & doing his best. Kane continued to impress, winning the round for the Junior 160 category, so also winning the series as well 🏆🥇. We're super proud of Kane's talent now shining through, with a pretty amazing ability to remain calm under pressure, we're excited to see how he continues to progress in the future!

A big thanks again to everyone involved and congratulations to all the competitors, it's not easy to pluck up the courage to get on a motorbike & race, let alone when it's pouring with rain. Big thanks to all the volunteers sitting out there in the rain ensuring the day runs smoothly & everyone is safe.

The whole series has been an amazing experience for our whole family. It's a competitive environment but that doesn't take away from the camaraderie and team work amongst the families & competitors, as parents we love that our kids a learning how that should be done, whether they win or lose if you don't have competitors you don't have anyone to race against & that's pretty boring!
