One last race to finish the year.
2nd place 50k.

I took charge from the start line and made sure to beat the hell out of the lads right up to the summit of Dun Mountain.
I wasn't going to hide or let anyone else hide on the long climb.
By the time we reached the peak, the lead group had died off from about six to just two of us.
Not long after beginning the technical descent, I pulled a bad line through the tussock, which allowed Jack to make a pass and drop me before I corrected onto the right path again.
This is ironically the exact place where I made my move last year to take the lead which ended in a win.
With some very weak descending on my part, I later dropped to 3rd about half way down the mountain.
I just didn't have the foot placement or aggression after most of a year not racing fast trails, and found myself tripping more than I ever have in a race.
Once down the mountain though, I still had my running legs and powered through the flatter sections, jumping back into 2nd and putting a good gap on 3rd.
At 40 km, I clipped my toe going down a fast hill and went full superman, with my right knee taking the full impact as I crashed into a rock.
I was pretty smashed and unsure if I was going to be able to get up or even finish, but I dusted myself off, picked up my scattered belongings from the ground and got moving again.
Dusty and bloody, I hammered on to get the final 13 km to the finish in Nelson.
I made up a bit of ground on 1st, but not enough to steal the win, finishing 3 minutes behind Jack.

2 seconds per km faster than last year.
Much faster in the first half, but much slower in the second half.
That's racing though.

Big thanks to my trusty Puma Nitro Elite 3's which have carried me to 2x 100 mile race wins, 2x 50k races wins, 1x 100 mile 2nd, 15:31 in the 5k and now a 2nd at the Spectacle 50k

It hurts

It had been hurting for a long time though.
But now, it was getting just a little too much.

In the backyard, no matter how good you are, you need to want it more than the next person.

The discomfort, the fatigue, the seemingly endless darkness, it had all added up to a point of tipping the scales.
At this point, I just didn't want it enough.
Not enough to conuously will my body past its desire to have a rest as I had done for days already.

I pushed it past the world record and into 118 hours with 790 km of running.
But that was enough for now.

It's not often that anyone will push to failure.
Even when it does occur, failure occurs in the mind before the body, more than 99% of the time.

It is very rare that I observe someone pushing to physical failure, and I probably only witness it once every couple of years.
Even more rarely in my own life.
This would be only the second time I have experienced physical failure in my sporting career.

It is a beautiful thing.
Something that must be earned.
Something that cannot be explained to those who have not dared and risked and achieved total catastrophic failure.

Some have said that this picture was when the wheels fell off the bus.
No sir, the tires had caught fire and I was driving on the rims for days at this point.
The bus had been hijacked, crashed, and driven into the ocean in the days prior.
The scene you see above is when the entire machine imploded into dust.
The hull not even good for scrap metal.

My heart is full

I was just a kid with a dream.
All I wanted was to run a world record and become the best in the world.
My PB leading into the event was 46 hours 308 km.
By the end of it, my PB was 101 hours and 677 km.
I had matched the world record and was the assist to the new world record.

This time, I'm older, wiser, meaner, and have had another two years to finesse my craft.
Gone are my days of surviving to 100 hours.
Now, I can thrive through 4 days of racing.

This time, the race doesn’t even start until we reach 100.

101 + 43

Possibly the greatest sporting achievement of my life so far.

101 signifies the number of hours that I ran 677 km to match the backyard ultra world record before bowing out as the assist to the new world record.

Many ask me how long it took to recover from four and a half days of running, surely your legs were destroyed and you were tired beyond measure. Of course, but that's where 43 comes in.

43 signifies the number of hours where I ran 288 km only 9 days later to take the win at another backyard ultra.

Two races, two weeks, 144 hours on foot, 964.8 km, a world record, a 2nd place, a win

That second race was the true test. That second race was where I went to the bottom of the well, and further.
