One last race to finish the year.
2nd place 50k.
I took charge from the start line and made sure to beat the hell out of the lads right up to the summit of Dun Mountain.
I wasn't going to hide or let anyone else hide on the long climb.
By the time we reached the peak, the lead group had died off from about six to just two of us.
Not long after beginning the technical descent, I pulled a bad line through the tussock, which allowed Jack to make a pass and drop me before I corrected onto the right path again.
This is ironically the exact place where I made my move last year to take the lead which ended in a win.
With some very weak descending on my part, I later dropped to 3rd about half way down the mountain.
I just didn't have the foot placement or aggression after most of a year not racing fast trails, and found myself tripping more than I ever have in a race.
Once down the mountain though, I still had my running legs and powered through the flatter sections, jumping back into 2nd and putting a good gap on 3rd.
At 40 km, I clipped my toe going down a fast hill and went full superman, with my right knee taking the full impact as I crashed into a rock.
I was pretty smashed and unsure if I was going to be able to get up or even finish, but I dusted myself off, picked up my scattered belongings from the ground and got moving again.
Dusty and bloody, I hammered on to get the final 13 km to the finish in Nelson.
I made up a bit of ground on 1st, but not enough to steal the win, finishing 3 minutes behind Jack.
2 seconds per km faster than last year.
Much faster in the first half, but much slower in the second half.
That's racing though.
Big thanks to my trusty Puma Nitro Elite 3's which have carried me to 2x 100 mile race wins, 2x 50k races wins, 1x 100 mile 2nd, 15:31 in the 5k and now a 2nd at the Spectacle 50k
