The boys had their finals match the other weekend vs Hikurangi, after leading for most of the game Hikurangi managed to get one back in the last quarter leaving it 1-1 at the end of play, unfortunately we lost the shootout 0-2. But all in all it has been a great season for us being our first year back in over a decade in whangarei, finishing second in the round robins and second in the finals, congrats to Hikurangi on your great season and winning the comp in your first year in div1, we enjoyed playing you guys.
Hockey isn’t over for us as we look to defend our powell cup in a couple weeks.

We would just like to say a big congrats to the Rodney-Otamatea Hockey team in which we sponsor for making the finals of the men's open grade hockey. This is an awesome achievement for their first season back in the game given the last time there was a team was about 12 years ago. We will be there tomorrow to show our support. Semi Final week and the lads had the challenge of Springfield who were keen to get one over Rota as they had yet to do so this year. The opening Stanza and it was all Rota as they pressed hard and fast from the off. It was only a matter of minutes, and Rota put one away to have it 1-0. The boys didn’t have to wait long to put another one away, through some very impressive defence to have the score sitting at 2-0 at the midway point of the opening quarter. Springfield managed to find their feet and start applying some pressure of their own towards the end of the first quarter. Going into the break the boys were full of confidence and in good spirits. Quarter 2 and it was a fast start again with the boys pushing hard at Springfields goal which eventually resulted in a goal. The second half of the quarter however belonged to Springfield as the pendulum swung their way. With plenty of forward momentum and pushing players forward they found themselves in Rotas final third of the field ultimately pulling a goal back having it 3-1 at the half. Quarter 3 and the lads came out quick and managed to net another goal, but it was short lived as Springfield once again pushed hard at Rota’s defence and managed to have it 4-2 going into the final quarter. The final stanza and it really was one way traffic as Rota bounced back from an average previous quarter and put 2 more away leaving it 6-2 at the final whistle. A very well rounded performance once again from the Rota boys, which puts them in good steed going into the grand final for the season.

As the regular season concluded at the final whistle for the boys last week, it ushered in the start of finals round. The boys had the task of taming Hora Hora who were coming off the back of a well deserved win the week prior against Mangapai C who Rota drew 2-2 with. Quarter 1 and the boys came out of the blocks hard and fast carrying last week's form into the opening stanza. With plenty of forward momentum and the majority of the ball, it wasn't long until the boys put the ball into Hora Hora's goal. Quarter 2 and again it was Rota who were pushing hard from the off ensuring that they valued the ball with precise and accurate passing and ensuring no easy turnovers. With plenty of quick ball, rolling out and pushing down the flanks it once again saw Rota menacing Hora Hora's keeper, ultimately resulting in a goal. Quarter 3 and for Rota, it has been the quarter which has troubled the boys and it proved no different. Hora Hora pushed hard doing to Rota what they had done to them in the prior 2 quarters. With Rota somewhat asleep at the wheel, it wasn't long until they found themselves only ahead by 1 as Hora Hora struck back. The quarter played out with plenty of back and forth, yet neither could capitalize leaving it 2-1 going into the final quarter. Quarter 4 and Rota after a bit of a stern chat at the break upped the tempo and managed to put another ball home at the midway point of the quarter. With a few more chances on goal it would ultimately remain unchanged leaving it 3-1 at the final whistle.
The boys will take confidence going into the semi final as it was again another overall, well rounded and well executed performance. It will be a big one as they take on Springfield who will be out to unseat the boys as they have yet to beat them this season.

Week 21 and it was the final game of the league round which presented Hikurangi. The boys went into the game knowing that they had to win to put the pressure back on Mangapai B who had jumped ahead by 2 points. Quarter 1 and it was a very tightly contested start as both teams like to play open and free flowing hockey. Hikurangi applied the early pressure and had the share of the ball. It wasn’t all one way traffic though as Rota managed to find their feet and find some form. With a breakdown in play in the midfield saw Hikurangi with a quick break which ultimately led to a goal having it 1-0 going into the break. Quarter 2 and again it was another tightly contested quarter, however Rota managed to start playing some very controlled hockey by valuing the ball and starving Hikurangi of ball, which led to a number of chances on goal, which eventually got turned into a point through a stroke off of a PC. Quarter 3 and again nothing could really separate either team as they traded blows, yet neither could find another goal as each teams defence held strong. It took a lucky through ball to change it which unfortunately for the boys didn’t go in their favour as Hikurangi pounced and capitalised going 2-1 into the final quarter. Quarter 4 and the boys knew they had to push hard to have a hope in pulling off a win. As legs tired on both teams there was plenty of possession change, but as hard as the boys pushed, they just couldn’t buy a goal with a few missed chances leaving it 2-1 at the final whistle. What brings an end to the regular league season, finishing in 2nd spot for Rota’s first season back, was a rather great achievement, especially as 70% of the team hadn’t played for over 10 years some even longer.

Next up is the finals, which brings Hora Hora who are coming off the back of a final league win so will be full of confidence.
