🏁 100 Years of Powerboat Racing at Lake Kaniere 🏁
In 2027, we proudly celebrate a century of powerboat racing at Lake Kaniere.
It all began on New Year’s Day, 1927, when the Lake Kaniere Boat Club held its very first regatta. The opening event - a two-mile motorboat race - featured five competitors, with Captain Cantrick’s Dorothy taking the win at an impressive top speed of around 20 miles per hour.
Even in those early years, club members showed a strong passion for racing, traveling to compete at other events around the country, while also hosting visiting competitors back at Lake Kaniere.
In the years leading up to World War II, the club evolved, and in 1940 became the Lake Kaniere Yacht and Power Boat Club - bringing together both sailors and powerboat racers under one banner. Though yachts are no longer part of the club today, that era helped shape the strong foundation we continue to build on.
From humble beginnings to high-speed racing, our club has been driven by dedicated volunteers, passionate competitors, and a community that has supported us every step of the way.
Here’s to 100 years of history - and the next generation of racing on Lake Kaniere.
