Just after what I have now renamed Humble Hill.

No, I won't be putting up the videos of the countless filthy looks I got from the dogs that clearly said, "Hurry up fat man, we've got a race to run!"

And yes, I also sound like I'm dying.

But once we got past that, the boys started to sync up a lot more and settled into a really nice pace together.

Our first big trip away racing took us all the way up to Hanmer Springs!

After a long trip up and a good night's rest, we were ready to start our first morning race with just the two boys on the rig, while Sakari took a well-deserved rest after our last outing in Naseby.

This video is the start of our first race. The boys hadn't run alongside each other in quite some time, so it took them a little while to link back up and find their rhythm.

And Odys... well, Odys seemed a little more interested in following his nose than focusing on the race!

Now for the most important post of our year!

Fender gave us the amazing opportunity to share our sport, our dogs and our little mushing community with family & our nephew! Mr Dacklyn got to enter his very first race!

And he absolutely aced it!

Taking the opportunity to jump on the scooter with Charlie and Mr Monty, he took to it like he’d been doing it forever. It was pretty obvious from the grin that it was definitely a hit!

In fact, I’m pretty sure it was such a hit that he has already started laying out plans for a trailer… one that apparently needs to be full of dogs! 🤭😅😆

Not entirely sure how Mum and Dad are going to feel about that one Mr. Dacklyn!

We really hope we can get you out with us a lot more over the summer, help you build your confidence, have some more adventures together and hopefully see you at a few events next year.

It was genuinely amazing being able to share this part of our world with you and, even better, seeing just how much you enjoyed it.

Who knows… maybe we’ve got another little musher in the making! 🤔

A week has already gone by, and we’ve officially said goodbye to the end of our season.

We finished where we started, back on our home grounds, and what was supposed to be a nice, cruisey finish to the year turned into a plethora of lessons for me!

From removing approximately 7 possums from the mouths of the dogs, to countless tangles and around 5 km of little to no brakes, it certainly wasn’t quite the relaxing finish I had imagined!

But hey, if you don’t go through it, you don’t learn the skills to handle it in the future. When all was said and done, I loved every minute of it, from the challenges the weather threw at us to the extra, completely unrequired trails we somehow managed to explore on Sunday!

We want to say the biggest thank you to some very special people who have been a huge part of our season.

Paul & Karen — thank you for trusting us with your sweet girl for the whole season. We love having her as part of our little team and can’t wait to watch her grow!

Helen — thank you for entrusting me with two absolute superstars. We couldn’t have asked for a more amazing experience, having them alongside the boys and watching them show them how it’s done!

Daryn — thank you for being yourself, for the little tidbits about running bigger teams, and for being my sounding board when I already know the answer but decide to overthink everything anyway!

And to everyone who has run with us, offered advice and guidance, helped with handling, made us laugh or simply made us feel welcomed — we genuinely cannot thank you enough.

A massive thank you to the SSDA. You guys are always amazing to be around, and every offer to join you on the trails means more to us than you probably realise.

Lastly, to those always there in the background, whether close by or up in the North Island, we hope we can always make you proud.

We already can’t wait for next season! But first, I’m finally going to spend the next few weeks uploading the many videos and photos we’ve got up our sleeve... apparently I’ve been far too busy running dogs to post anything!

2 Mushers. 6 Dogs. 2 Long-Distance Runs. 🐾❄️

After weeks of preparation, a few challenges, a couple of team changes and plenty of anticipation, it was finally time to go.

First stop: Naseby, followed by a vet visit where, naturally, every dog made sure the vet received a full complement of smooches and cuddles. Priorities. 😂

Then came race day.

Charlie was set to take on his first 7.5km Canicross distance run, while I was lined up for 15km. Normally I’d be heading out with my three, but for this one I had the incredible opportunity to add two extra dogs from another team, taking my little three-dog team to five dogs for the distance run.

Everything was ready… apart from one slightly behind-schedule musher. Somehow, we still made the start just in time! 😂

The team apparently decided that maximum speed was required from the second we left. A few “easy!” later, they finally settled into a rhythm and the run became pure bliss.

Running a bigger team brought a whole new set of lessons, challenges and, honestly, a huge amount of joy. Then, almost before we knew it, we were turning for the finish.

A massive thank you to everyone who made this event possible. It has very quickly become a favourite, but this one meant a little more to me. The challenge, the lessons, the feeling of covering distance with the dogs and even looking back at my musher profile from before this event… it really showed me just how much this incredible sport has changed my outlook.

I made a promise after this event.

I’ve kept it.

Day Three – NZFSS Dryland Champs.

The final day saw Charlie and Monty line up for one more adventure, and once again they showed exactly what makes this partnership so special.

Another challenging race, another opportunity to learn, and another moment where Charlie showed his determination. After taking another tumble on course, he picked himself back up with a smile, jumped back on, and kept pushing forward. The falls didn’t shake his confidence—they only seemed to make him more determined.

Charlie and Monty continued to work brilliantly together, building trust with every run and showing the heart, courage, and enjoyment that makes this special for us.

The results are great, but seeing Charlie’s attitude, resilience, and the bond he shares with Monty is what makes these days truly special.

A very proud parents watching these two take on every challenge, smile through the tough moments, and keep chasing the next adventure. 🐾🚴‍♂️❄️

Day Three – NZFSS Dryland Champs.

The final day brought a few changes for us—a small team adjustment and a move into a different class. A huge thank you to the officiating team for allowing the change and making it possible for us to line up and give it a crack.

With just the two boys on the rig, the goal was simple: let them run, enjoy themselves, and see what they could do. The extra challenge of having a dog missing from the team didn’t seem to slow them down at all. In fact, they found another gear and delivered our fastest time of the entire weekend.

The boys were absolutely flying, working together beautifully and showing the heart and determination that makes this sport so special. Their effort was rewarded with 1st place in the Two Dog Rig class, and they couldn’t have done themselves any prouder.

A fantastic way to finish the weekend—two dogs, one rig, and a whole lot of heart. 🐾❄️🏆

Day Two – Mount Buster Race.

While the big dogs were taking on their own challenge, Charlie and Monty stepped up for the bikejor course and showed exactly what teamwork, determination, and a love for the trail are all about.

Going up against some incredibly tough competition, these two put together an awesome run and continued to show how much they are growing as a team. The speed, trust, and connection between them were amazing to watch as they powered their way along the course.

The best part of the day wasn’t just the racing—it was seeing Charlie’s attitude. After having a fall in both races so far, he could have easily been disappointed, but instead he popped back up with a smile, dusted himself off, and kept pushing forward. That determination and positive attitude are what make these moments so special.

Monty gave everything he had, and Charlie showed the grit and confidence to keep going when things didn’t go perfectly. Watching these two build their partnership, take on challenges, and enjoy the adventure together is something pretty special.

A very proud moment for us as parents watching these two give it everything.
