Over the weekend I attended at art workshop for personal development.
It was SO cathartic
We all need moments, days, or afternoons where we leave all the "other" parts of our life behind and step into a world of creativity, colour, no sense of time, & the chance to explore and play.

The workshop was run by Franzi from who spends most of her time working with children - teaching them the "art of play"

We were inspired to explore art through play .... And it was SUCH an enjoyable experience I can't wait to do another.

We painted a canvas using techniques we had explored earlier in the workshop.
Then, after the paint had dried, we applied all manner of items in a collage over the top.

Starting with no fixed idea
Adding items as they appeared
Playing with shape, texture, colour, medium, perspective
Creating the ultimate sacrilege of cutting out words from an ancient book - to give it new life 🌼

Why do I tell you this?
What does it have to do with teaching you Pilates or helping your gut heal?

🖌️Exploring creativity and play helps keep my brain fresh
🖼️Gives me new perspectives
🎨Enriches my own experiences so I can encourage you to expand yours
👨🏼‍🎨Do things I'm "rusty" at and a "beginner" so that I continue to remember what it feels like to start at the beginning
🌼Remember to fall in love with beauty and colour every day
👨🏼‍🎓 Be the student

I'm not going to be opening a fine arts Studio anytime soon but I did love every minute of the workshop.

Part II: Exercises For Backpain

Following on from Part 1 - we explore more options to use to help relieve back pain:

*Spikey ball to the glutes - helps relieve some of the tension that builds up in the glutes as they support the back
*Remind yourself to relax shoulders, and breathe
*Seated glute stretch, preferably with the added seat swing

Other things I mention here:
*Short walks
*Alternate activities
*Lie down on the floor or bed
*Change seats frequently

What's your favourite activity or movement?

Part 1: Exercises For Backpain
I've been a bit challenged this week with a back that tells me I've overdone it in the garden.
Join me in a series of movements I find helpful. Just remember to move within the range of movement that works for YOU

*Altered Cat/Cow Stretch with a wiggle of the hips
*Roll ups - works best with a chair with wheels
*Side bends with the chair for support
*Hip Circles - a Swiss Ball is always easier, otherwise a chair with wheels
*Slouching - letting the back relax into the chair

Tune in for Part 2

I love all these movements because none of them involve getting down on the floor (which requires getting back up again, right?!)

Tell me what works best for you

When What You Carry Weighs You Down
I'm going to tell you the story about a recent experience, an epiphany, a moment that blew my mind

I have always believed that our bodies are incredible
Its entire job is to keep you alive. At all costs.
Every compensative movement, every bodily 'dis-function', every cough or sneeze, every frozen shoulder .... is a form of keeping you protected - from something or another.

So it is with weight gain or loss - our body is keeping us alive in ways that we might not ever realise.

Our body is saving us daily from toxic substances (including hormones), or from our own toxic thoughts, or even our own grief

And that's where my story lies...

Since I turned 50 and went into menopause I have been struggling (as women do) with some extra weight sitting around my middle. More so in the past 6-12 months

As per my usual style I have dived into as many pathways as I could to discover what was behind my shift.
Many would say "Menopause is the obvious contributor" and move on. They haven't met me yet!!

So.... I moved to a higher protein intake, more weights work, lymphatic brushing, supplements, HRT, prioritising time for me ....
NOTHING shifted the needle
Not one iota
In fact, it seemed to worsen

In the past few weeks a couple of "external" things have shifted in my life
Changes in environment
Things seemingly out of my control

The day following one such change - I woke up and noticed my usual morning belly was different. A change in shape.
I had done absolutely nothing physically differently EXCEPT there had been a shift in my psyche
I realised what I had been holding on to regarding that situation
The situation changed. My psyche shifted. Weight shifted.

The other day I met a friend for a bodywork session
We unpacked all the layers that have been overlapping lately
She reflected back all the things. Cutting through the noise and bringing clarity in her true style

We talked about grief and how it shows up in the body
Congestion, stuck-ness, pain, stiff joints, lung issues, constipation, weight gain or loss, heart issues
These are the layers of grief that come from a normal functioning life - where you grieve:
the things that you no longer have
the things that will never be
for people who have been significant in your life, and are no longer here
the person you used to be... and so much more
When you throw in some grief that eats you to the bone and erodes part of you the body will do what it can to protect you from your own grief, your own self.

After my session with Bec I got up and needed to hoist up my pants for the rest of the day. More of the weight of the world had been let go of from my body!

THIS is why working with your nervous system is key for any health issue
Looking beyond the symptoms and considering the whole of your life is also key

In my practice I had a person come and see me for their physical symptoms
We ended up writing a timeline of their life on a very large whiteboard
Mapping out all of the significant life events
We even mapped out what was going on in their parent's lives before they were born

Their eyes opened very wide as they said "See, Im not as crazy as everyone has said I am" Needless to say there were tears of relief
A weight lifted off them that day
They practically skipped out of my room
When I checked in a week later, they were still buzzing from their realisations
Their physical symptoms had reduced by half and they said their weight had reduced without doing any other things.

If your body is sending you messages that it is shielding you from pain, toxin or grief, I encourage you to find a practitioner who has the skills to look at all the aspects of health.
If you have experienced significant trauma it is even more important to find a practitioner who is gentle and understands the involvement of the nervous system

I trust you find some lightness in your life

"My Blend" by

There is something very grounding about this aromatherapy oil blend - probably because of its intention and ingredients.

Hayley has completed studies in Clinical Aromatherapy - this means she knows what she is doing! Not just someone who has followed a recipe from the internet, but someone who has studied each oil's properties, the way they work synergystically with other oils, their extraction methods, & plant sourcing.

This Blend originally was created during the lockdown period we had a few years back. Designed to support mental, emotional health and wellbeing.

Check out what it contains:
Grapefruit oil - for clear perception & confidence
Petitgrain - for relaxation, to calm & soothe anger, help with sleep
Frankincense - for regeneration and healing, can also be uplifting and joyful
Bergamot - for calming (FYI it is also the essence in Earl Gray Tea)
Lavender - famous for its calming effects and use for sleep
Rose Geranium - helps alleviate stress & anxiety, and nervous tension
Ylang Ylang - a sweet oil that is soothing
Basil - a refreshing oil often used for improving stamina.

ALL these goodies blended to perfection in an easy rollerball you can pop in your handbag, or school bag or satchel.

✅I can personally vouch for this oil blend - our family has used it on many an occasion when school felt too hard, or life was generally overwhelming, or bedtime was challenging, or we just needed some grounding we could smell and action.

Next time you're in the Studio - check it out - see if its the right thing for you.

(PS< not all essential oils suit every person. This is generic advice. Please check all ingredients are safe for you)

-Exercise Focus Friday-
Fast or slow, or a combo
With hands on the floor, on a box or a bench
Elbows on a Swiss Ball...whatever your jam, whatever your level ..... Mountain Climbers are a great exercise for stamina & strength, and a great way to make sure you can get up off the floor.

Because the body weight is forward onto the wrists and hands its a great way to build strength in the wrists.
Wrists are problematic for so many people - whether that be from overuse, or underuse - so it pays to start at a level that works for you and build from there.

Shoulders are also a problem area for many - again this is where a modification might be required as you begin.
Resting elbows on a box, bench or coffee table can be more supportive for shoulders and wrists.

Driving the knees under the body could start with just a tap of the foot to a more forward position.
It might progress to more of a "running" movement.

And.... while all of those things are happening .... this exercise is really about your abdominals! They are required for their supportive role.
They help support the back muscles
They help drive the legs
And hold the torso while balancing on the 3 non-moving limbs!

If you're not quite sure which level you should start with - try experimenting with options
If you have shoulder or wrist issues - its a good idea to work with a trainer so you are aware of how to support the shoulder girdle, and strengthen the wrists.

Of course, nothing beats climbing a real mountain - but this will help you when you get out into the real thing! 🏔

Keep sparkling 💖
