SORT is dedicated to restoring the mauri and flow to Piriharakeke. In our club, we see Waka Ama as a way to reconnect our community with Piriharakeke in a positive way and every paddle stroke as an opportunity to restore the mauri of our precious taonga.

🌱 Te Kenehi Teira - SORT member & Trustee Horizons Regional Council

🍃 LAUNCH DAY 🍃

We began our day with the guidance of Pa Heemi Te Peeti at dawn to prepare for the launch of Te Awahou Waka Ama followed by parakuihi at Matt’s Kitchen.

Our Head Coach, Orohena Brightwell led the event today for approx. 60 attendees. It was a positive day overall for our soft launch with the primary intention being: Connecting the community with Piriharakeke.

Thank you to everyone that came out. This will be the first of many events as we find our feet as a club. Rest assured that we’ve already begun the mahi required to bring Waka Ama to our local kura and we’re currently refining and refining our offerings.

As of today we have had over 70 registrations come through via our website and we know many of you represent an entire whānau looking to paddle.

Ngā mihi nui to Sport Manawatū and SORT Save Our River Trust Foxton for supporting the kaupapa today. We also received support from individual members of our community today contributing to the kai, inu, and resources required to make the day possible!

If you’re thinking of joining us or want to be the first to know about our upcoming events, please register your interest at: teawahouwakaama.nz/register
