🚒❤️ National Volunteer Week – Thank You to Our Volunteers ❤️🚒

This National Volunteer Week, we’d like to recognise and thank the incredible members of the Bunnythorpe Volunteer Fire Brigade.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life, giving up their time with family, work, and friends to train, respond to emergencies, support the community, and help keep Bunnythorpe and the surrounding areas safe.

Whether it’s responding to fires, motor vehicle crashes, medical emergencies, public events, or spending countless hours training, our volunteers are always ready to answer the call when needed.

We are proud of the dedication, commitment, and teamwork shown by every member of our brigade. Your service makes a real difference in our community every day.

To all volunteer firefighters, support personnel, and their families who support them behind the scenes – thank you. 👏

🚒❤️ Supporting One of Our Own – Sky Tower Challenge 2026 ❤️🚒

Our very own Mark Kiely is taking on the 2026 Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge in support of Blood Cancer New Zealand.

Today, Mark will climb 1,103 steps across 51 flights of stairs in full firefighting gear and breathing apparatus, alongside firefighters from across New Zealand. It’s a tough challenge, but it’s all for an incredible cause.

Every dollar raised helps Blood Cancer NZ continue providing support for patients and their families, fund vital research, and raise awareness of blood cancers throughout New Zealand.

If you’re able to help, please consider supporting Mark’s fundraising efforts. No donation is too small, and every contribution makes a difference.

We’re incredibly proud of Mark for taking on this challenge and representing both the Bunnythorpe and Ōtaki Fire Brigades. 👏🔥

Please donate if you can and help us cheer Mark on as he prepares for the climb!

🔥 Before You Light the Fire… Check Your Chimney! 🏠

As the colder months roll in, it’s important to make sure your chimney is clear before using your fireplace.

Birds often build nests in chimneys, and debris like leaves or soot can build up over time. These blockages can cause smoke to back up into your home or even lead to a chimney fire.

👉 Before your first fire of the season:
• Check your chimney for nests or blockages
• Get it cleaned if needed
• Make sure smoke can flow freely

A quick check now can help keep your home warm and safe this winter.

Stay safe, Bunnythorpe! ❤️

Operations at last night's incidents wrapped up this evening while fire investigators will carry on with their hard mahi tomorrow.
This was an extraordinary fire that saw a range of resources from across the region called in as well as crews carrying out multiple BA wearings in challenging conditions (up to 7 wearings for some teams). We cannot thank all of our crews enough for your dedicated work to bring this incident to an end.
As always a massive thanks to our awesome surrounding volunteer brigades who attended Bunnythorpe Volunteer Fire Brigade Feilding Volunteer Fire Brigade Ashhurst Volunteer Fire Brigade Rongotea volunteer fire Brigade Palmerston North Operational Support Unit Levin Volunteer Fire Brigade along with cover in Palmy being provided by the teams at Woodville Volunteer Fire Brigade and Bulls Volunteer Fire Brigade and many more who were moved as part of this knock on effect.
This incident also saw multiple career crews called into support from Whanganui, Napier/Hastings, Paraparaumu, Porirua, Thorndon, Remutaka and Hutt City along with many of our own amazing staff being called in on their days off to support our duty crews.
We were well supported throughout by Rapid Relief Team NZ Hato Hone St John Manawatu, Taranaki, Whanganui-Ruapehu Police as well as our own District and Group managers, Volunteer Support Officers, Trainers and Fire Investigators.
Finally, we appreciate the patience of the public and local businesses, especially those affected by road closures and disruption to the morning commute. Our thoughts are with the business owners impacted by this fire.
